5.0 out of 5 stars Rather wonderful 5 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I bought this CD by mistake thinking it was by Martin Stephenson. This turned out to be one of the most fortuitous mistakes I've ever made. It is a wonderful CD that never ceases to move me, comprising an excellent combination of traditional British music and American blues.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you thought you didn't like folk... 29 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
These reviews can be a bit one-sided. Would you take time to review an album which didn't bother you one way or the other all that much. Needless to say, I'm going to rave about this one. Martin Simpson posesses a miraculous touch, and the combination of styles on this album make it a real treat. You can hear American and English folk blended with something altogether more exotic from the other instrumentalists. Every time you listen, you'll hear something different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisitely Elegant 5 Mar 2004
Format:Audio CD
I have been moved to supply a review - for the first time.
I'm a jazz guitar fan, and came across Martin Simpson when he toured with Martin Taylor. His playing was impressive, and I bought this album as it seemed to be the least 'folksy' in his canon.
Exactly right - some traditional British themes, mixed liberally with American blues amd third world instrumentation. But the most impressive thing is the simple, visceral elegance of the man's playing and arrangements. Track 5 (The Week Before Easter) truly moves me to tears every time I listen to it.
I thoroughly recommend that you get this whatever style of music you favour.
