Carmel first hit the charts in the early 1980s with Bad Day and went on to produce a string of very accomplished ablums. The band were huge in Europe (far more than in their native England), which says nothing for English taste. This compilation covers the period from Carmel's stark but brilliant first album, The Drum is Everything through to more polished offerings. As the band became more successful, production values became more lavish - jazz fused with soul, blues, rock and reggae. Superb combinations of brass, strings, percussion and backing vocals were added to the band's nucleus of vocals, bass and drums to produce the most spellbinding rhythms. Carmel McCourt's haunting vocals on soulful ballads are unforgettalbe, as is the sheer delight of their more uptempo tracks. Check out their version of Its All in the Game possibly the best cover version I've ever heard. Check out all the tracks - this compilation is brilliant. Every home should have one!

I loved the music of Carmel from the start, and right back to their roots too. I heard the band's stark and spare version of Tracks of My Tears on the John Peel show and sat bolt upright - just bass, drums and that spectacular, soaring voice. It was totally electrifying, which makes the absence of that song from this collection slightly mystifying.

But that's a small gripe. This is an absolute bargain of an album, packed to the rafters with brilliant tracks across the soul/blues/jazz/swing spectrum. The solid base laid down by Jim Parris and Gerry Darby is laid with a thick, rich cream of brass and the glorious vocals of Carmel McCourt. I hope they're still touring somewhere and that someone continues to enjoy the band's fine music.

I remembered being really impressed with Carmel during her short-lived time in the Public Eye. However, maybe time has dimmed the enthusiasm but she doesn't sound as good as I recall. Since then, we have had the talents of Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Paloma Faith and others, so poor Carmel no longer sounds fresh and exciting. One for real fans only. Sorry Carmel, nothing personal...
