Book Description

22 Feb 2010 Cool Camping
Now covering 50 of the very best campsites in Scotland, including 20 brand new entries, this fully revised second edition of Cool Camping: Scotland is essential reading for contemporary campers. Out of the newly discovered campsites, there's a grassy oasis amid the lunar landscape of the Isle of Harris, a site within a hidden Highland glen and an organic farm sitting pretty on Orkney. With pitches nestled away in woodlands or surrounded by mountains, and sites on the shores of lochs, up in the hills and on some of Scotland's most spectacular islands, this book includes everything you need to know to make the most of your holiday in Scotland. There are new features on walks and trails, wild camping and some of Scotland's best festivals and events. Plus there's loads of practical information including how to get to each site, public transport details, what to do if it rains and where to get a decent dram. The handy 'At A Glance' section allows you to easily identify the campsites you like, by browsing categories including 'Cool For Campfires', 'Stunning Views', 'Middle of Nowhere', 'Lochside Chilling', 'Cool For Camper Vans' and 'Dog Friendly'. Other books in the series include England, Wales, France, Europe, Kids, The Cool Camping Guide to Festivals and The Cool Camping Cookbook.

This is a brilliant book for any camper visiting Scotland who prefers to avoid the larger formal and regimented sites.

The authors have done a fantastic job in seeing out some of the best campsites that Scotland has to offer.

This book is well-written in a very fluent and chatty style and the authors' enthusiasm for the very special sites they've found comes across in leaps and bounds - and rubs off on the reader.

The information and insight shared is just what a camper needs - ie Do the showers work? Are the facilities clean and is it worth visiting?

Sites are described bluntly and honestly with the facilities tried and tested and reported as they are - eg "the showers, although hot, rely more on gravity than water pressure to get you wet"(!).

Website addresses, phone numbers, directions and guide prices (updated for 2010 in this edition) are included for all sites and each is supplemented by several photos of the site and its surroundings making for a very readable book sure to entice you to the less-publicised sites. The book could also be of interest to non-campers looking for a few more remote places to visit, some of which are off the much-beaten track and far away from the mass-tourism honeypots. For campers seeking total uncommercialised freedom and seclusion, some wild-camping sites are also included.

A highly-recommended read for any camper visiting Scotland and seeking to avoid the large, formal and regimented sites in favour of something more secluded and special.

4.0 out of 5 stars its cool 23 Jun 2010
Nice book, perhaps too many sites on the west coast. How about some more in the far north east; - Caithness, Black isle etc. Great and handy wee book.

4.0 out of 5 stars camping helper 4 Sep 2011
This book seems to be biased towards tents - we are in an old VW camper. It is very useful in most respects but the sites were more or less the ones detailed on our AA road map rather than especially good little sites that a normal person would miss. Although the site descriptions were helpful; if there was a choice of two; they are not always as wonderful or as "cool" as depicted - do a bit of research first if you can.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great camping book 28 Jun 2010
This book is well researched, tells it like it is and will be really useful to both new and experienced campers. I like the sections that tell you what you can do if its raining (essential in Scotland!)and what standards the amenities are. Recommended for all outdoor fans.

I chose this book as I like the brand and was not disappointed .. Have not had a chance yet to try out any of the campsites listed due to our rather soggy Summer .. but am looking forward to doing so! Was just what I was looking for, special places to stay and informative descriptions.
