Book Description

A cookbook to love, a cookbook to read. Delicious, beautiful, organic, seasonal recipes from Britain’s organic food hero!

A cookbook to love, a cookbook to read. Delicious, beautiful, seasonal recipes from Keith Abel, the utterly charismatic co-founder of Abel & Cole, Britain's most successful organic home delivery company.

Cooking Outside the Box : The Abel & Cole Seasonal, Organic Cookbook provides mouth-watering excuses for eating glorious food exactly when it comes into its best. These are inspiring yet unfussy recipes that let simple ingredients speak for themselves (but don't try to stop him speaking on their behalf). Brilliantly written and entertaining, even the most timid cook can approach these recipes with gusto. Who wouldn't want to cook Keith's way? So throw out your measuring cups, get rid of your scales, and get to know your food!

Recipes include Pork Loin Chops on a Bed of Sweet Orchard Apples, Husk-Wrapped and Roasted Garlic Corn, Venison Fillet with Black Kale and Port, 45-Minute Pumpkin & Parmesan Bread, Chargrilled Asparagus and Halloumi with a Citrus Dressing, and Rhubarb Bread and Butter Pudding.

Keith also suggests delicious smoothies and soups to help you find a use for that inevitable glut of leftover fruit and veggies at the end of the week.

Fully illustrated with beautiful finished food shots, inspiring atmospheric pictures and charming visual references to Keith's own quirky style. Cooking Outside the Box also features Keith's anecdotes on organic farms and small producers, stories about the friends and family who have inspired him, and hilarious suggestions for getting the most out of your cooking experience.

So eat with the seasons and eat well!

4.0 out of 5 stars Countryside and coleslaw! 30 Oct. 2010
Beautifully photographed, this book is a pleasure to look at. More importantly, Keith Abel lets the reader into his world so that after finishing this book, you will be yearning for a farmhouse kitchen, a country walk and an organic vegetable box!
All the recipes are uncomplicated and unpretentious.Punchy Leeks and Goats' Cheese on Toast is as simple as it gets but very tasty. Equally easy is Baked Strawberries with Honey Whipped Cream - delicious!
These are clearly recipes which are part of the fabric of Abel family life. Try Lamb with Courgette, Lime and Ginger or Venison Sausages with Colcannon and Wild Mushroom Sauce. Both are straightforward recipes with great flavours, sufficiently different to make dinner more interesting.
If this has so far failed to win you over, this book is worth buying for the coleslaw recipe alone. As Keith Abel says, it will knock your socks off!

5.0 out of 5 stars The most honest cookbook I've ever bought! 31 Mar. 2008
Unfortunately Abel and Cole don't deliver to my area but Abel and Cole: Easy, Seasonal, Organic certainly delivered to my table!

I decided to cook up Roasted Squash and Wild Rocket Risotto for me and my girlfriend and, although we don't get organic boxes to our door, there is a nearby farmer's market that provided everything I needed for this easy-to-follow recipe.

I've made risotto in the past and it can go really wrong but Keith Abel's tell-it-like-it-is approach to cooking gave me the confidence to have another stab at it. The food was really rich but definitely delicious and earned me lots of brownie points...

I'd recommend this book to anybody who loves great food but doesn't want to waste time faffing over fiddly preparation. Plus it's particularly good if, like me, your partner is a strict veggie but you enjoy a nice bit of meat - I'll try the Calcutta Lamb Burger recipe for myself next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing addition to kitchen shelves 22 Sept. 2006
Brilliantly written with great recipes. Not only is the book full of great ideas but it's also a fun read for those with a sense of humour. Abel & Cole rightly deserve to be the frontrunners of the organic home delivery movement if Mr. Abel's creativity and passion for the product is anything to go by.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy, fresh approach to cooking 26 April 2011
I LOVE this approach to cooking: it's simple, it's passionate and it's realistic. These aren't recipes to follow rigidly, but rather recipes to inspire you to get more creative in the kitchen. It tells you to be loose and experimental with your cooking - to throw things in the pan, throw some more things in, give it a swoosh, and enjoy. And if it doesn't turn out quite as well as you hoped, try something different next time.

There are, however, lots of practical tips and delicious recipes - as well as useful suggestions for what to do with the more obscure items in my weekly Abel and Cole box.

Unlike many of my cookery books which clutter the shelves looking beautiful under a layer of dust, this one gets picked up regularly. There's always something tasty to satisfy my mood, whether it's exciting and unusual, or soulful and comforting. And if I want to jazz up the sorry, shrivelled veg lurking at the back of the fridge, this book will always have a good suggestion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab... more please 3 Feb. 2007
By Angevin
Brilliant cookbook, [...] totally devoid of ponciness. If you are of the 'shove a glug of x into a dollop of y' school of cooking you will LOVE this book. [...]

I can only echo the cries of 'more please'

4.0 out of 5 stars good seasonal cooking 10 July 2009
By B. Ryan
A nice selection of recipes which makes the most of seasonal products. Wouldn't have thought that pumpkin and apple soup would work, but it was really yummy! A lot of meat recipes so you are limited if you are vegetarian. But it's an enjoyable cookbook to flick through, clear instructions but casual. If you are nervous about quantities such as dash, splash and glug be warned they do use them, but I think it makes for a relaxed and very approchable cookbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it now! 23 Jan. 2007
By Divecat
This book is brilliant, stuffed with original and easy, easy, easy recipes. When I look at my other cookbooks, which aren't generally ordered seasonally, they somehow seem wrong and out of step. You will use this book time and again. Please write another one, Keith.
