Product Description

Product Description

The debut album from the most vibrant, swinging big band in the UK. Co-bandleaders Matt Skelton (drums) and Colin Skinner (alto sax) - 2 key members of The John Wilson Orchestra - pay tribute here to the music of Terry Gibbs, featuring Anthony Kerr in the role as vibraphonist-supreme.
Featuring arrangements by the American greats such as Bill Holman, Manny Albam, and Lennie Niehaus amongst other luminaries, including great British talent Colin Skinner!

From the Artist

"The Skelton Skinner Allstars Big Band are one of the best new bands I've heard in many years. They remind me so much of my Dream Band." TERRY GIBBS

"The energy is terrific and their passion for this music is palpable! World-class!" CLAIRE MARTIN

"It's a rare thing indeed to hear a band THIS good. The Skelton Skinner Allstars Big Band has everything: fabulous ensemble playing, terrific jazz soloists, knockout time. The arrangements are inventive and swing like hell. And - get this - the recorded sound is nigh on perfect. Please buy this CD in bulk." JOHN WILSON

"The best of British playing the best of American - a joyous, swinging romp from start to finish." MARK NIGHTINGALE

5.0 out of 5 stars Dream Band 2011 ! 4 Oct 2011
Format:Audio CD
I happened to be in California on vacation and missed this band's live debut in the UK. Coincidentally, however, I did meet with Terry Gibbs that weekend and showed him the 'flyer' for the UK gig. He was excited to know that his music was being revived, updated and played by top UK players. He got in touch and later was sent recordings. His verdict is seen above.
This really is "one of the best new bands in many years" and benefits from top quality state-of-the-art recording from engineers who really know this music.
It's no coincidence that many of these same players are in John Wilson's 'big band plus strings' aggregation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cordon Bleu Cookin' 28 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD
This is the best British big band I've heard for a long time. Come to think of it, it's the best band from anywhere in the world I've heard since being lucky enough to see the Clayton/Hamilton band a few years back.
To revisit the Terry Gibbs' Dreamband charts is a brave thing to do, and this band pulls it off as if they've been playing them forever.
The recording is excellent, with the natural sound doing full justice to the fabulous playing.
At last, a British big band with subtlety and dynamics; not to mention great soloists and sidemen.
I urge you to buy this.
Steve Lloyd

This is a superb album from a stellar band. Great arrangements and ridiculously good playing from all concerned, particularly the flawless Anthony Kerr on vibes. Go to [...] where you can get the disc for a tenner including postage! Sorry Amazon, not often you're under-cut is it?!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music 10 Sep 2012

I am the sound man at Pinner Big Band Club and recently had the pleasure of working with Colin Skinner, who gave us an excellent record recital, finishing with Billie's Bounce from this CD. I had heard a couple of tracks from this album and had been mightily impressed with the playing, and so I took the opportunity to buy a copy from the man himself. I checked it out when I got home (valve driven system with full range speakers and a souped up CD player) and finished up playing the whole album. Wow! Excellent playing as one would expect from such a stellar line-up, and some of the best sound I have heard from CD (I am still very much a vinyl freak). The recording acoustic - Pinner Parish Church - was all there, and the recording is just superb. My immediate thought was that this must have been recorded by Tony Faulkner, who lives in the area, but the engineer was Pete North, bass trombonist in the band and the production was all by musicians (Colin Skinner, Pete North, Matt Skelton) and supervised by another of our top musicians, Howard McGill. All I can say is buy it! It is musically very satisfying, and the production is a real treat for your ears. I bought a second copy from Amazon Marketplace so I could give it to a friend who couldn't be with us at Pinner.
