BBC Review

Robert Cray may be a gloriously reliable musician when it comes to live performances, but he has become decidedly erratic when it comes to album releases. For 30 years America's most successful contemporary blues guitarist and singer-songwriter didn't release a live album, but now there have been three in just four years. In 2006 there was Live from Across the Pond, recorded at London's Royal Albert Hall when he was opening for Eric Clapton (rather confusingly, the title wasn't changed for its UK release). Two years later came Live at the BBC, featuring 1988 and 1991 recordings from London's Hammersmith Odeon. Now comes yet another live album (which is also his first live DVD release), recorded earlier this year in Mobile, Alabama.

As expected, it's an impressive set that provides further reminders of why the hard-working and versatile Cray is such a popular live performer. But his followers should check their CD collections before purchasing, for he repeats a lot of both his most recent and best-known material. Four of these songs appeared on last year's studio album, This Time; four more were on his Across the Pond set; and two on the BBC album. That old favourite from 1986, "Right Next Door", appears on all three live albums.

Cray has succeeded by creating a style of his own, mixing blues with anything from soul to rock and gospel. He has his critics, who find his approach too cheery or lacking in edge for a blues singer, and there are certainly passages here where he eases off with laidback, relaxed songs like the soulful "Lotta Lovin'" and the ballad "I Can't Fail". But he's also capable of pained and emotional vocals, as on "Our Last Time", and he's an inspired guitarist.

The high points include his pared-down treatment of "Sitting on Top of the World", a song made famous by Howlin' Wolf and BB King, and–best of all–the live treatment of "Chicken in the Kitchen". A slow blues, concerned with sex, cooking and infidelity, it builds into a magnificent instrumental work-out, with Cray's guitar sparring with the keyboards of Jim Pugh, who has been playing an increasingly important role in this excellent band.

By P. Clack TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Robert Cray surely must rank as one of the most consistently good artists, his choice of new material makes every album he produces a listening pleasure, always exploring new ideas and themes to write songs about. He really is a superb and very fluent guitarist with a style his own.As good as his studio albums are live there seems an extra fire and dimension to his performing art.So to get this live set, along with his first performance DVD is a pure delight.Recorded in the USA in a great venue along with his current band (it's so good to have Richard Cousins back on bass duties, he always adds so much to the Cray sound because he is such a superb bassman and his bass layers so thick and full). The whole set is a mix of classic and more recent Cray material but each song has developed on the road and all in all produces the very best live I've heard by the band yet.The Royal Albert Hall live double was very good but this is better still because the quality of both the material and live sound is just so very good throughout. With the wonderful Jim Pugh on keyboards and Tony Braunagel on drums this is aa tight solid unit on top of their game with Cray clearly relishing this gig we get something very special indeed. OK to the tracks ,there's twelve of them and include 'Smokin' Gun','Chicken In The Kitchen','Our Last Time', 'Right Next Door' and 'Sittin ' On Top Of The World'. The DVD has the full set plus backstage film and photo gallery and two bonus video's so for the price of a single CD you get two wonderful discs by one of modern blues greatest exponents in absolute cracking form.Recommended highly.

Top Notch Cray! 12 Aug 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have to admit to having been a little disappointed with Robert Cray's output over the past 10 years or so. Having released a string of superb albums he fell into the trap of playing, to my ears anyway, "formula music". This tended to be Southern soul oriented blues, with songs based almost entirely around relationships that have gone bad, with lots of vocal content, but little of his trademark guitar playing.

The double live album (Across The Pond) was a good album, but not great. It certainly did not match up to the BBC Sessions release (which of course was recorded much earlier). The recent release of the Authorised Bootleg again showed what a strong performer Cray was back in the 80s.

This live cd/dvd package, recorded last year, goes a long way to recovering his stature, in my opinion. Strong songs, a top notch band, excellent vocals, plenty of classic Cray guitar licks, and an excellent sound, make for a must-have package for Cray fans, or anyone interested in modern blues based music.

To have the concert on both cd and dvd (albeit with a couple of tracks less on the cd) makes this fantastic value for money.

Highly recommended!
