I found this book in a reduced to clear section for £1 and have never got a better deal in my life.. (and still can't understand why..) His recipes aren't full of every herb and spice you could possibly get your hands on as other vegan books, but the bare essentials, but never tasting like the bare essentials were put in it.. You have soups, starters, mains, rices, sauces, pastas, desserts, cakes and an even better plus is the index at the back is an interesting read of the origins of the vegetables/fruits.. and also how to pick the ripe fruits in the stores (for those who are not so familiar with how to pick a ripe aubergine etc!)

I have had his book for half a year now and use it more often than any other.. an even better plus is that although he hasn't meant to, many of his recipes do not combine proteins and carbohydrates, and i find these books lacking from the bookstores entirely. I wait in anticipation for another of Richard's books. Really, every vegan should have this book.

Rather dull 9 Jan 2008
Format:Paperback
I bought this book a few years ago. I am the owner of many vegan cook books and I have to say that unfortunately it is the one I use the least. I gave it two stars because I do agree the dishes are very economical - otherwise I would have given only one. The problem seems to be that the recipes never seem to have properly rounded flavours, and although this is sometimes easily rectified - perhaps by adding garlic and herbs I always felt that the author's taste buds must be a little limited. Eva batt's recipes are also very frugal but seem to work better than this. A plus point however is that there is nothing difficult to get hold of; no strange ingredients that cost a fortune - not always the case with vegan cookery. I would recommend Leah Leneman, The Viva La Vegan authors (also other American author's - they are definately best for deserts, get yourself some cup measures and then it's all so simple!) and our own Rose Elliot who is still unbeatable in terms of flavour and cost -all her vegetarian books have many vegan recipes and she also wrote Vegan feast. There are fantastic books out there and I am rarely disapointed. BUT I was with this one unfortunately.
