Reviews

In A Cook On The Wild Side, celebrity chef and host Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall creates delectable feasts using ingredients found in nature, not the supermarket. Follow the eccentric cook as he goes anywhere and eats anything in the vast and under-used resource of nature's larder. On his journey into the wilderness, Hugh discovers recipes ranging from eel soup to rook, and from pigeon pie to tasty grey squirrel; his desserts even include such delicacies as gooseberry and puffball soufflé. In his search for the ultimate natural ingredients, he finds himself confronting poachers and abseiling cliffs--all to bring you edible alternatives to the usual menu.

I have just been watching this series again on televison & it's been a joy. Hugh, aboard the "gastro wagon" (his converted Land Rover)roams the countryside looking for "free" food from natures larder (as it were). He also takes to the water ways on a canal longboat & is up trees (getting rooks for rook pie) & scaling cliffs & the like, to get all manner of wild food.
It really is a "Cook On The Wild Side" , the emphasis very much on the "wild" - fascinating & a must for all Hugh fans & for those with a keen interest in foods you can find growing on your doorstep in Britain's countryside.
I will be buying this post haste !!!
UPDATE - I did buy this & the whole series is just absolutely bang on. I advise you to treat yourselves immediately & then get the "Edwardian House" DVD which is equally superb

Well lets start off with the point of this show, despite the title, its a view of a life which most of us wont or at least dont for now experience. Seeing how other people live their life along a road trip...

Its a celebrated series looking at what can be eaten, what definately can't, what lives some people live away from the modern sprawl of England and what can be achieved by taking a big step away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The road trip is charming and the people he meets along the way all have their own quirky ways to dazzle and delight the viewers.

This is the birth of what realy becomes River Cottage and beyond that, a great start to a long journey...

Im still reading the back of the box looking for "Happens to meet this person in the street, cooking instruction guide, i sleep and eat 24/7 in my gastro wagon" in response to some extremely critical reviews....Lighten up!

I know this series very well, just needed it on DVD so I could watch it any time! It really is great to see where Hugh started and anyone interested in him and what he has done, but not seen this series, really MUST get hold of a copy. My only gripe is the really quite poor video quality. It seems that the production team were determined to cram the series on to only 2 disk. The subsequent compression of the data has made the picture inferior to Sky's standard definition transmission. Shame really, but Hugh is ace!

I havent seen cook in the wild side in a long time, im glad they are available and i will definetly be buying it. i wanted to add aswell that in one of the episodes where Hugh is on the River Thames, he goes on a boat and fishies with a rather large short man, Phil 'the eel' Sanders, thats my grandad!!! some years ago now, but he is still fishing the thames everyday!

Maybe it's because I drive a Landrover and love boating, but frankly I believe it is Hugh's exuberant way of living and presenting that makes this a wonderful dvd! It is not all about showing what you "can forage together" when you want to but it is also about respect for nature and all her creatures and about living and enjoying it. Way to go Hugh! For me it has been a real treat watching this dvd when the rains were pounding on my windows, dreaming of the coming spring when I can go out and nibble from the wild!

This is the first and second series, and the still standup as great, watchable TV.

HFW hasn't really changed that much and these early series show his enthusiasm for getting out and cooking what you can, where you can. A must if you haven't ever seen his early work, and essential if you have as they have proved to be timeless.

Hue Fernley-Whittingstal is amazing and pretty much everything he does is pure gold. He really highlights the need to be more Eco-friendly in a non-preachy manner and he gives some really great ideas for meals too! Love his stuff!
