Book Description

Conviction, a satirical, original sequel to Jane Austen's timeless classic Pride and Prejudice, reveals the romantic destiny of Georgiana Darcy. The author, however, does not rest on the laurels of Austen; she introduces an entirely new cast of characters, including an ambitious soldier, a wistful vicar, a flirtatious abolitionist, and an ordinary curate. The fates of these characters intertwine as each struggles to find the conviction to live out his or her own calling, while confronting issues of loyalty, courage, faith, and love. Conviction is not a novel merely for fans of Pride and Prejudice, but for all who take part in the ordinary struggles of humanity.

From the Back Cover

REVISED: As the sister of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, Georgiana is
assured of a large dowry. It's up to her to weed out the fortune hunters
among her beaus. But will she be able to determine which man most
complements her spirit? And, once she has given her word to one man, can
she train her heart to obey? Questions of loyalty, faith, conviction, and
love feed this engaging romp, which introduces the captivating vicar Jacob
Markwood, an ambitious soldier, a flirtatious abolitionist, and an ordinary
curate while continuing the lives of favorites Mr. and Mrs. Darcy and Kitty
Bennett. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Georgiana Takes Centre Stage, 17 Mar 2005

In this Jane Austen 'sequel', Burris takes up the Pride & Prejudice reins, choosing Georgiana Darcy as her heroine. Old friends appear along with a new cast of characters. Burris takes a much larger canvas than Austen and includes things that Austen never did - political discussion and scenes taking place where only men are present. You also spend time inside the heads of several different characters where Austen just tends to stick with her heroine. This isn't particularly a criticism - no one can out-Austen Austen! - but rather an observation so you know what to expect. I really enjoyed the story and found the new characters well written and the original characters faithful. There were a few little discrepancies, such as Mr Wickham having continued for a time in Colonel Forster's regiment when in Pride & Prejudice we see him banished to the Regulars in Newcastle. We get a little bogged down with christianity at times, but overall this is among the better of the 'sequels' and I found it a very enjoyable read.

The only think I found a bit irritating was the Americanised spelling, which tends to jar when you think you are supposed to be reading a novel based in Regency England!

2.0 out of 5 stars Religious overtones, 19 May 2007
This review is from: Conviction: A Sequel to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (Paperback)
I think this book could have been written by Mary Bennett. The heavy theme of Christianity was unrealistic and quite uncomfortable at times. I can't understand why the author chose to make the hero so religiously zealous because he came across more like Mr Collins than Mr Darcy. The story was okay but nothing spectatular and Kitty Bennett's end was unsatisfactory. Georgiana Darcy was a good heroine but his was not enough to stop the book being at best mundane!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining novel, but nothing too special, 17 April 2006
This review is from: Conviction: A Sequel to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (Paperback)
Having read the very positive reviews, and being a Jane Austen fan, I decided to purchase this book. Unfortunately, I am not as enthusiastic as the other reviewers are. I did enjoy the book, but not as a Jane Austen sequel. It is a nice, romantic story about Georgina Darcy and her suitors. At times, Ms Burris' writing can be compared to that of Jane Austen. But don't expect this book to be a real sequel to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Enjoy it for what it is, an entertaining novel, but nothing too special.
