Conviction is a 2010 drama film directed by Tony Goldwyn. It stars Hilary Swank as Betty Anne Waters and Sam Rockwell as her brother Kenneth "Kenny" Waters. The film is based on the true story of Betty Anne Waters, a single mother who works tirelessly to free her wrongfully convicted brother Kenny. The story unfolds in flashbacks, and the film opens with the scene of a brutal murder in Massachusetts in 1980. We soon see that Betty Anne's life in many ways revolves around her brother, who is now in jail for the murder. Despite Kenny's knack for getting in trouble, they have always been close. Two years after his release as a suspect in the 1980 murder of Katharina Brow in Ayer, Massachusetts, "new" testimony from two witnesses lead police to arrest Kenny and he is tried. Based on this circumstantial evidence, Kenny is convicted in 1983 of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. The three main witnesses against him are Sergeant Nancy Taylor (Melissa Leo) from the local police department, his ex-wife, Brenda (Clea DuVall), and his ex-girlfriend, Roseanna (Juliette Lewis). Convistion stars: Hilary Swank, Sam Rockwell, Minnie Driver, Melissa Leo, Owen Campbell.Just to let you know, we have imported this product from France - do not worry though, it plays in English and French. In addition it contains optional French subtitles!

4.0 out of 5 stars Swank and Rockwell Perform with Pure Conviction 16 Mar 2011
By Mitun TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
'Conviction' is a drama film that is based on a true story and released in 2010 to positive reviews. Unfortunately the film has not been given the attention it should've and as a result performed poorly at the box-office.

The movie centres around Betty Anne Waters (Hilary Swank) who starts law school in order to represent her brother (Sam Rockwell), who she believes has been wrongfully convicted of murder.

The film is compelling and really moving from beginning to end. The drama combined with the performances of the lead actors is emotional and will strike a chord with the audience. The ending is perfectly satisfying.

The things I was mainly disappointed with were the absence of court room scenes and gripping moments. I know it's based on a true story and the film concentrates on the characters and their personal struggles. However, I was expecting intense moments/situations.

The show-stealers in the movie are Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell. They are fantastic and produce great performances. They deserved Oscar nominations, shocked they didn't. Another actor who I really liked in the movie was Minnie Driver who enacts the role of Swank's friend (Abra Rice). She performs very nicely and naturally demands the attention of the viewer. Melissa Leo who plays Nancy Taylor is effective in a short role. Conor Donovan and Owen Campbell play Swank's sons and act very well. They share a positive chemistry with Swank.

The direction provided by Tony Goldwyn is excellent as he extracts award-winning performances from Swank and Rockwell.

In the end the feature is a good drama with cracking performances.

'Conviction' is one of the competent dramas of 2010.

4.0 out of 5 stars One more good performance from Hilary Swank 13 Mar 2011
By Aloha
Format:DVD
We all know performance from Hilary Swank in films such as Boys Don't Cry and Million Dollar Baby, and this one also one of her great performance but unfortunately didn't fetch much of Awards as other films did.

This film is based on real life story of brother and sister where sister tires to get her law degree so that she can fight case of her brother, who is convicted for murder and spending life time sentence in jail.

This film is center around Betty Anne Waters (played by Hilary Swank) and her brother Kenneth "Kenny" Waters (Played by Sam Rockwell).

Anne mother of two, separated and waitress she is studying law(after finishing high school then bachelor degree), only reason why she want to do this law degree is to free her brother from jail, as she believe that her brother is innocent.

Overall this is nice movie and performance by Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell is one of their best one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational 11 Jun 2011
By Becky
Format:DVD
There are only two words to describe this compelling story; truly inspirational. My Brother-in-law had the pleasure of meeting Betty-Ann Waters at the Toronto Film Festival. She is an amazing person and symbolises pure hope and determination.

The film will have you hooked from beginning to end with outstanding performances from Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell.
