Quite simply the best and most informative volume on Woody allen you can buy.Why you may ask ? Because everything you read here comes straight from Woody himself.Think of any question you like regarding his films and related topics and the answer is probably here in this book.
The basic structure is by each individual aspect of film making i.e thinking of it,writing it,casting it,shooting it,editing it,scoring it etc and each topic gets in depth treatment with the great man himself. The answers that Allen gives would suggest that he is very much at ease with Eric Lax the author and so the whole thing comes across as a chat between friends and not a grilling under duress.
The conversations take place in a variety of locations and over several decades and capture Woody in a variety of moods but all of them have something interesting in their content.
What was it like to work with Sean Penn ? How does he rate Gene Hackman as an actor ? Which of his work is he really satisfied with ? How does he get his ideas for new projects ? How does he score a film ? Those and hundreds and hundreds more questions are answered in an honest,truthfull and at times witty style.
The faber & faber book "Woody Allen on Woody Allen" is important reading but this is essential.
If you don't buy now then i suggest you are not a serious fan of Woody Allen.
