Product Description

In Jean Becker s CONVERSATION WITH MY GARDENER a middle-aged landscape painter, played by DANIEL AUTEUIL, recently separated, who has lived for many years in Paris, returns to the house in the country where he grew up and which he s inherited from his mother. He hires a local gardener, JEAN-PIERRE DARROUSSIN, and soon discovers they were best friends at school together. Based on a book by Henri Cueco, this is mainly a two-hander for the talents of Auteuil and Darroussin. As two old friends, they spend a lot of time talking, philosophising, and reminiscing. This relaxed and in some ways quintessentially French film is appealing simply because it is content to explore, in a gentle way, a long-standing friendship. As the seasons change eternal truths come into perspective.

How brilliantly well the French conceive and produce gentle masterpieces like this. An artist and a jobbing gardener initially form a pragmatic, arms-length relationship, stemming from a need on the one hand to bring some order to his semi-derelict garden, and on the other to earn some money.

With infinite subtlety, the two men through conversations achieve an understanding of each other's qualities, their strengths and weaknesses, their values and their aspirations. In the process, they develop a mutual respect and affection (almost dependency), such that the denouement, when it comes, has an intensity seldom achieved in the cinema.

Truly, a wonderful film.

Essential viewing 22 Dec 2009
Format:DVD
A beautifully paced film, with meditative sections on the meaning of friendship, art and death, as well as a coruscating and very funny side-swipe at critics. There is a genuine sense of a co-operative friendship between two men, originally school friends, whom life has taken in very different directions, and circumstances have made their paths converge in middle age. They discover the ordinary can become graced when seen without preconception.

Classic French Recipe 14 May 2011
By Charles Vasey TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
This is the sort of film that appears far less on paper than it is on the screen. We have a number of typical Gallic themes: the wealthy bourgeois upon whom the trials of life seem light, the return to village France, the dual life of the home and of Paris (both of which seem hardly any physical distance apart), and the crumbling of a love affair. What transforms these trite tales is the masterful twist given to them by the writers (who understand both worlds) and actors. Here two old school friends meet again, one as a painter the other as his gardener. The two worlds rub up against each other marvellously well, reminding us that not all France is engaged in love affairs with 24 year olds. The lead actors can say a great deal by the slightest movement of the head or the eyes. Having glamoured the viewer we are sucked into a tale with just a little more reality than is usual. It remains firmly in the French School of Life-Affirming rather than British Cynical.

I enjoyed it greatly.

For a while, this admittedly talky film (the title is quite accurate, it is mostly conversations) bored me a bit. Read more
