How brilliantly well the French conceive and produce gentle masterpieces like this. An artist and a jobbing gardener initially form a pragmatic, arms-length relationship, stemming from a need on the one hand to bring some order to his semi-derelict garden, and on the other to earn some money.
With infinite subtlety, the two men through conversations achieve an understanding of each other's qualities, their strengths and weaknesses, their values and their aspirations. In the process, they develop a mutual respect and affection (almost dependency), such that the denouement, when it comes, has an intensity seldom achieved in the cinema.
Truly, a wonderful film.
