Bored by Latin , Greek and the Classical World at school ? Not amused by 21st century Disneylands ?
No longer titillated by Daily Newspaper horoscope columns ?
Then you need to read 'NETHERWORLD ', Robert Temple's latest foray into those very strange but always fascinating days and ways of the Ancient World.
Revealing to the modern public the exact physical location of the ' hell ' ( Hades ) of the Ancients ( It lies next to the city of Naples in southern Italy and was built by the Greeks thousands of years ago as a sort of macabre amusement park for the Ancients ) and then moving on to immerse the reader into the do do's and don't do's pertaining to the ancient rites of animal sacrifice and the examining of their entrails ( considered by the ancients to be by far
the superior science in forecasting the future course of events and -incredibly - favoured by them over astrology ) and finally climaxing in everything one one always wanted to know about the Chinese ' I Ching '( should be pronounced 'ee jing ' Temple authoritatively informs ) NETHERWORLD continues Robert Temple's excellent and riveting journey into everything one could possibly want to know about the ancient world as it really was and with great success follows in the steps of his year 2000 best seller 'The Crystal Sun'.
This is a highly recommended book for anyone interested in learning more about the Classical World by a remarkably original scholar and author descended from one of England's great aristocratic families whose ancient family seat is now the presigious Stowe School.
But be warned !
For those who buy this book a crack in the wall of their home will never appear quite the same again !

This book is split into two parts. Part one concerns the ancient Greek oracle of the dead. Part two is an assembly of rambling thoughts and bits of other folk's research about cracks. I won't tire you with the details of the second, except to say that it doesn't go anywhere: there's lots of detail but no killer insight (although some of the phrasing is appropriately obscure).

This book is worth reading for Part One, which is an interesting revisit of another archaeologist's discovery. As for Part Two, don't bother, it ain't worth much.

Interesting Tour Of Divination 4 Aug 2003
By paul mason - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Robert Temple's book is an intriquing and well researched tome on the history and art of divination both in the Western, and Eastern tradition. Netherworld is very informative, and well written, however my main critique is that it takes too long to get to the meat of the issue. Though Temple does an excellent and thorough job describing the oracles made famous by antiquitity and ancient myths, I felt myself growing impatient to read about actual foretelling, and prohecy. As stated its obvious he researched this title very well, and I learnt much from it. It just wasnt quite as exciting or intriquing as I suspected though, through no fault of his. I would in conclussion recommend this book to real history buffs, and those interested in ancient practices of foretelling the future. I learnt a lot about the oracles I never knew so in that sense Temples book is education. I just wish he gave more details in parts and less in other topics covered in his book.
