Perfect for the beginner, this book will take you through the first stages of learning Mandarin. The book is set out in a series of short lessons which include sentences, keywords, phrases and advice on pronunciation. The lessons appear in English, Pinying and script so the reader can not only learn the language but also begin to recognise the multitude of different characters. At the end of each lesson there is a short "homework" section to help you absorb what you've learnt. This book is used by all the students in my University Mandarin class and is highly recommended by my lecturer.

While not the most colourful, this is probably the most useful Chinese textbook I've ever used. There's no messing about, it simply follows a logical enough structure of new vocab-sentences-grammar-conversation practice to cover lots of topics that will be useful during your stay in China. You can also pick and mix the order that you study the chapters in as they're based around themes, e.g. going shopping, going to the post office, asking for directions, etc.

The emphasis is on picking up conversational Mandarin for the beginner, but it also encourages the learner to pick up reading and writing Chinese at the very beginning. I often think it must scare learners to be told by certain books that "writing Chinese is just so difficult we're going to forget about it for several lessons/months", by which stage your lexicon's not going to be insignificant, and the task of getting your character set to match it will...well, it will take absolutely ages, to be honest.

The book moves quickly so you do have to study it very dilligently - the chapters may be short, but it just takes time to learn all the information that each one is stuffed with.

Note: I used this in China, starting out in a Chinese class, then just working through it with Chinese friends. You'll need to work through it with a Mandarin speaker on hand to help out with pronunciation and conversation practice.
