If you ever wanted to get a complete understanding of Mobile Technology quickly, then this is the book to read. After discussing the various access techniques (TDMA, FDMA and CDMA) there are seperate chapters devoted to GSM, GPRS and UMTS. Later on there are chapters on IP Applications, IP Telephony and All IP UMTS network.

Though you cannot expect too much indepth coverage on every single topic, the authors have provided just necessary details. Also some of the concepts that are not explained in other books and standards have been explained here, which are very useful. Some of the topics i found interesting was on ATM, GTP (GPRS Tunneling protocol) and SIP in All-IP network.

I would recommend this book to everyone whishing to enhance their knowledge on Mobile Technologies. If anyone considering taking up some course on UMTS/3G technology should read this book before going on it.

These guys know their stuff! If you're looking for a detailed and accurate explanation of protocol stacks, functional architecture and call sequences for GSM, GPRS and UMTS this book will provide it. Their overviews of familar technologies such as ATM and IP, although necessarily brief, are equally accurate and authoritative. Worth the money.

My jump-start guide and reference 3 Nov 2009

This book gives an excellent overview of the way 3G networks are operating: air interface, radio access and core elements. It compiles and represents in readable form various IETF RFC and 3GPP documents. For my daily work I would appreciate more details on all-IP UMTS (the book ends with UMTS release 5), MEF backhaul, IpSec and packet core elements. I would trade extensive coverage of ATM, GPRS legacy and barely readable network captures for that. I hope a second edition with more contemporary subheading "IP, MEF, LTE and NGMN" is already in authors' pipeline. I'm on a waiting list...
