I have recently had some early starts at work, so there is no way I want to brown off meat at 6am in the morning. Having read Jamie Oliver's Jamie's Ministry of Food: Anyone Can Learn to Cook in 24 Hours, Jamie specifically mentions the following: "In stew recipes you're often told to brown off the meat first. But I've done loads of tests and found the meat is just as delicious and tender without browning it first". Jamie is right - you don't need to faff about.

This book is different from the usual slow cooking recipe book, the recipes are really broken down and simplified versions of traditional slow cookery recipes. This book has lots of tasty recipes, all the ones I have tried have turned out successfully.

There are 9 chapters:

Soups
Chicken and poultry dishes
Beef dishes
Lamb dishes
Pork, bacon and ham dishes
Fish dishes
Pulse based dishes
Vegetable dishes
Fruit based dishes and other desserts

The different thing about this book is the versatility factor - for instance you can either use frozen diced onion, or if you have extra time, a fresh onion chopped. Likewise, you can use chopped garlic from a jar or chop up your own garlic cloves - its up to you what you want to do.

Some of my favorite recipes:

Chunky chilli con carne - this uses 450mg diced stewing steak, canned beans, jar of pickled peppers, onion, spices and herbs.
Creamy lamb and almond curry - this uses 700g lamb, onion, garlic, ginger, almond and oils. Finish off with creme fraiche or cream.

I always thought that a slow cooker was a bit useless because all you could cook in it was stew. But this book has changed my mind. It shows you how to combine convenience foods, easily prepared fresh ingredients - no pre-cooking - and seasonings to create some really interesting dishes. There are even some scrumptious puddings. So if you've got a slow cooker languishing at the back of your kitchen cupboard, this just might be the book that tempts you to use it again.

I was bought a slow cooker about 7 years ago and it happily lived in the back of a kitchen cupboard till I discovered this book about 3 months ago. It is now enjoying daily use in pride of place on my worktop. I was put off the idea of using slow cooking due to all the fussy precooking of ingredients, this book has put a stop to that. Some of the recipes really only take minutes to chuck in the pot; even with a 2 year olds help, now with a 3 month old also it takes all the stress out of cooking dinner. Most of the recipes are really delicious and make you feel guilty about being congratulated for your effort (because it doesn't take any effort). Brilliant book, I have recommended it to a friend and bought one for my mother-in-law already.

This book is great to have for during the week but both my husband and I felt it wasn't something that you'd use on a weekend, it didn't have that something special. I've tried quite a few of the recipes now and I have found the cooking time to be slightly out for my slow cooker - I need to take some time off (something worth bearing in mind).

I have tried - Caribbean chicken loaf (wasn't great), oriental turkey wraps (tasty), chunky chilli con carne (fine), three-meat casserole (awful), pork with coriander & wine (fine), baked bean loaf (great), cauliflower cheese (very dry). So as you can see it is hitty missy - but isn't any recipe book.

What I do like about it is that there are some conversions so if you're going for the true convenience food and using frozen vegetables for example, then she does give you the quantities for those. It really is simple to use, most recipes have just a few steps and they are so easy to follow. On average, I've found a recipe takes me no more than 15 minutes and if that still is too much on a morning, then you could prepare some of it the night before and keep it in the fridge.

Whilst this book will never be one of my favourites, it does give you some flexibility for those mornings when you're really pushed. Having said that, with some of the recipes there's nothing wrong with cooking them overnight and reheating them the next night!

This was a gift to my son & his new wife having given them the cooker for Xmas from Amazon. I suspected it had remained in its box - but this book stimulated a response mainly owing to the fact its recipes need little or no preparation. Delivery good.

This book is excellent for people who have little time to stand doing long preparation. It is very clear to understand and I know there are not many pictures but the end product makes up for this.
I shall be ordering another one for my Daughter-in-Law who has a very busy life.
