For those of you who might be wondering what the difference is between this book and the author's excellent earlier book "Slow Cooking For Yourself", the answer at first glance is... well, not a lot. As before, there's a variety of recipes - soups, light meals, seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes, with cakes and deserts to finish them off - and while some familiar recipes do make a reappearance, albeit slightly altered, the majority are of a similar ilk but brand new. This alone makes the book a worthwhile purchase if, like me, you've already got "Slow Cooking For Yourself".
There's one big difference between the books, though. NO PRE-COOKING OF INGREDIENTS! This comes as a welcome relief to those of us who love Catherine's recipes but don't always have the time or the inclination to pre-cook ingredients before adding them to our slow cookers. What's more, for those who don't want to spend time washing, peeling and chopping stuff up either, she frequently suggests frozen vegetables in place of their fresh counterparts (although this isn't obligatory, and she lists both options in the ingredients). Convenient indeed!
One thing though. Buyers should note that, once again, the average cooking time for these recipes seems to be about 2-5 hours. Those wanting to toss everything in the pot before a full day's work will probably need a timer.
Easy-to-follow recipes, no long lists of obscure ingredients, and a handful of colour photographs to whet your appetite: ultimately a great choice for singles who love their food but don't want to spend too much time preparing it.
Incidentally, if you're looking for a slow cooker to go with this book, you'll need a 1.5L capacity one. Ideally it should have an 'auto' heat setting, as well as 'high' and 'low'.
