Book Description

16 Aug 2012 Shadow Ops 1
All over the world people are 'coming up latent' - developing new and terrifying abilities. Untrained and panicked, they are summoning storms, raising the dead, and setting everything they touch ablaze.

US Army Lieutenant Oscar Britton has always done his duty, even when it means working alongside the feared Supernatural Operations Corps, hunting down and taking out those with newfound magical talents. But when he manifests a rare, startling power of his own and finds himself a marked man, all bets are off.

On the run from his former colleagues, Britton is driven into an underground shadow world, where he is about to learn that magic has changed all the rules he's ever known ... and that his life isn't the only thing he's fighting for.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a ride!! 23 July 2012
By Enquirer VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is pulse-pounding stuff. Like most other reviewers I am drwan to comparison with other authors, but don't think this means the book is just a rag-bag of other people's ideas. Cole has written something unique, but with many welcome echoes. Think of The Fugitive set sometime in the near future, except the fugitive is a kick-ass soldier who has suddenly discovered he has supuer-powers - super-powers his superiors want to use for their own purposes in a magical secret war!

The style reminds me of the clarity of Piers Anthony. The magic and humanity remind me of Ursula LeGuinn. The author is himself ex-miltary, ex-security contractor in Iraq, long time Dungeons and Dragons fanatic. This gives a ring of truth to the military side, which makes the magical aspect even more believable. The best military sci-fi you will read this year. The best pure fantasy you will read this year. The best 'clear and present danger' novel you will read this year, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop whatever you're doing. Get this book. 14 Feb 2013

Format:Paperback
Why? Because you're going to love it. You know how I know that? This book is awesome.

It's Military fiction, better than any i've read, mixed with a fantastic magic system.
You can't talk about cool, until you've met Oscar Britton.

I hate this phrase, but this really is a 'page turner'. The action is fast-paced, with a brilliant story to boot.
Basically if you don't read this book, you're missing out.

I'd happily recommend this to anyone(and I do, often!), not just fans of the Sci-Fi and Fantasy persuasion.

4.0 out of 5 stars IMHO, a great intro to a new genre. 9 Oct 2012
By ROROBLU'S MUM TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This looked interesting - a combination of magic, military and a slightly different angle on things and it's all the better for for all of the above! It reminds me of something that I can't just put my finger on at the moment. Ah! The main `Goblin' character reminded me a bit of Dobby, not sure why, it's just how my mind works.

It is a pretty entertaining read and the book maintains your interest and is paced pretty well. The characters are well written and had substance, in my mind. I would like to see more of this genre and indeed more of these characters. Fingers crossed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, teabreak/lunchtime read
Fast paced, entertaining premis, perhaps aimed at the younger reader. could crack on with the political/slavery allegories. Not bad if you just want a break from work.
