Product Description

Album Description

From visionary music video director and photographer, Anton Corbijn, comes CONTROL, the must-see love story of Ian and Deborah Curtis.

Electric new talent, Sam Riley brings Joy Division's tortured front man, Ian Curtis to the screen and Samantha Morton (MORVERN CALLAR, MINORITY REPORT) plays his loyal but tormented wife, Deborah.

CONTROL is Corbijn's feature film debut after decades of collaborating with some of the world's top bands including U2, REM, Nirvana, Depeche Mode, Metallica, The Killers and Coldplay. A friend and contemporary of Joy Division in the late Seventies, Corbijn is responsible for some of their most iconic photographs. In 1988 he directed a video for the band's `Atmosphere' as a requiem to Ian.

CONTROL won the Best European Film award at the Director's Fortnight in Cannes 2007 and will be released across the UK on 5 October.

4.0 out of 5 stars great tracks but in a new order, 6 Oct 2007
'Control' the CD is not a soundtrack. At the time of watching the film I thought 'what a great soundtrack'. It's what you'd hope to hear (Bowie/Roxy/Iggy/Velvets/Kraftwerk/.....Joy Divison) if you already knew the story. But the CD soundtrack completely reconfigures the film tracklisting.

The first sequence cementing Curtis and his pre-band outsider/music-love is accompanied by Bowie's Drive In Saturday, this comes 11 tracks in on the CD. Jean Genie doesn't even figure on the CD, tho' it does in the film.

If a soundtrack is designed to give you an aural sense of the film and its progression then this one doesn't. The CD is reorganised as an 'All Back to Ours' with Ian Curtis'... (?). That's not such a bad thing musically, 'cos the New Order one's great, but this one is supposed to be a soundtrack and it's not what it says on the tin. Lovely music though!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic soundtrack to acclaimed Ian Curtis biopic, 24 Sep 2007
By C. O'Brien (Scotland, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Control - the movie about Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis, who killed himself in 1980 - looks set for critical acclaim. Based on a book by the singer's widow Deborah, it's directed by legendary rock photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn, himself famous for the work he did back in the day with luminaries such as U2 and REM. The movie has already won the Best European Film award at Cannes.

This original soundtrack features plenty of music Joy division grew up with - glam anthems like Bowie's Drive-In Saturday and Roxy Music's artsy paean to Bogart, 2HB, glacial European tracks like Kraftwerk's Autobahn, Bowie's Warszawa and Dutch prog band Superster's weird She Was Naked.

There's urban Americana from Iggy Pop and the Velvets, and some rough-and-ready punk attitude like the Buzzcocks' Boredom and street poet John Cooper Clarke's Evidently Chickentown. It all adds local colour, but it's this kind of thing that bands like Joy Division ultimately helped to transcend, moving towards a kind of frozen grandeur, which was a million miles away from the sweat and spit of the class of '76.

Songs like Dead Souls, Love Will Tear Us Apart, and Atmosphere express the psychological wasteland that contributed to the death of Curtis, though his songs had a dignity that was perhaps missing from those of other rock martyrs such as Cobain. However, there are some puzzling omissions. The iconic She's Lost Control is missing from the soundtrack despite the movie's title, and an inferior, though raucous version of Transmission is played here by the cast band.

Finally, the devastating Shadowplay is radically reinterpreted by Las Vegas band The Killers - perhaps illustrating the band's continuing legacy more than the random slices of instrumental ambience contributed by New Order.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving, Dark and Compelling, 31 Aug 2009
By Ian R. West "deadwest" (Camberley, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Control is one of the best portrayals of any rock star that I've seen. It tells the story of how depression, epilepsy and the pressures of fame and relationships drove one of the most influential vocalists to suicide at a very young age. The fact that the film is entirely shot in black and white adds to the darkness of Curtis's short life.
