Book Description

1 Jun 2012
Contracting continues to outperform other sectors of the UK labour market. Client organisations are increasingly recognising the benefits offered by the flexible and highly skilled contracting workforce. And although many new contractors join the sector each year, skills shortages still exist in many core contracting disciplines. Tens of thousands of UK contractors used the first edition either to successfully navigate the choppy seas between employment and contracting, or to improve their skills to reach the calm waters where the best and highest-paid contracts are just waiting to be caught. And now this second edition has been extensively updated with brand new chapters, fully updated sections and new features. NEW in this Second Edition: - Tax and legislation: updated with all the relevant changes since the first edition - Agency Workers Regulations: a whole new chapter on AWR - IR35: an updated chapter with the latest rulings, case law and new lessons - Your contracting business: extensive revisions with new company law - When things go wrong: twenty new tried-and-tested solutions - Contractor Mindset: new features to help professionalise your contracting - Coming to the UK: extensive guidance to help contractors from overseas

Product Description

Don't even think about embarking into freelancing without ordering a copy of the Contractors Handbook by Dave Chaplin. You could easily spend years finding out the hard way, what this highly focused and relevant book tells you and, after reading it, you will know exactly how to handle all the pitfalls and joys of contracting. --David Colom, D J Colom & Co Chartered Accountants

I have successfully made the transition from permanent employment to working as a contractor. My advice to first-time contractors is buy the Contractors Handbook and read it thoroughly from cover to cover. Twice. If you are not serious, it ll frighten you off, and if you are serious, it contains a wealth of practical advice from seasoned contractors who ve been there and done that. --Ken Burrell, Brilliant Baselines

I'm finding the handbook to be very interesting and useful, especially as I'm rewriting my CV to a more high impact format. The best part so far has been the recent 'contract renewal' which, having read the handbook, I referred back to my agent to get it redrafted as a new contract with a change of title, and took the opportunity to get an increased rate as well! --Paul Gardner, UK Contractor

About the Author

Dave Chaplin has lived and breathed contracting since he first took the plunge and became a professional contractor in 1997. He spent seven years working as an IT contractor in the City of London on critical, cutting edge IT infrastructure and development projects for global players. Dave s contracting career has seen him survive and thrive through the highs of the boom years and the lows of the dot-com crash. He founded popular contractor website ContractorCalculator.co.uk, and has been its full-time CEO since 2004. That role has seen Dave consult with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), HM Treasury and HM Revenue and Customs on the future of IR35 and on tax simplification. He has become a contracting guru influencing a new generation of contractors through ContractorCalculator.co.uk, the Contractors Handbook, regular participation in industry-shaping round-table events, as well as his lectures and presentations on successful contracting.

I have been an independent contractor with my own limited company for 6 months and I am finding this book absolutely indispensable. Although it goes through the whole decision making process of why one might want to become a contractor and I had already taken that step, it was a great checklist for start up activities and for someone who has not yet taken the leap, it is a great support resource.
Chapters on marketing oneself to contracts and IR35. As well as lots of advice on how to comply with HMRC processes with as little stress as possible.
It doesn't show you how to compile annual reports but to be honest most self respecting business owner who isn't already a qualified accountant should get an accountant to do that side of things anyway. This book is about transitioning to independence, discharging one's duties as company director or umbrella company contractor and how to secure successful contracts.
Highly recommended!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but some errors 20 May 2014

I've not read any other contractor books, but have found this helpful. Some repetition, but I found that useful for emphasis and memory. Could have done with a proof read though. Eg page 335 refers to section 8.5.6 which doesn't exist. There was some bad arithmetic somewhere that I can't find right now.
