Contraband aka The Smuggler is an uncompromising and suspenseful ITALIAN GANGSTER MOVIE by Lucio Fulci - known as the God-Father of gore for his films like NEW YORK RIPPER and THE BEYOND .. Fulci is first and foremost a talented film maker and story teller: here his uncompromising style depicts the ultra violence which permeates the Napolitan underworld.. (where not even GOMORRAH dared to tread..)

Hard-as-nail stalwart Fabio Testi (REVOLVER) stars as Luca, a cigarette smuggler who triggers an eye-popping violent mob war after his brother is shot and his wife kidnapped.

He will face Marcel Bozzufi (the bad guy in of FRENCH CONNECTION!) who co-stars in this depraved mayhem as Fulci unleashes his trade-mark gut-splaterring, brain-exploding, flesh-frying scenes of unimaginable cruelty and carnage.. that will turns the bay of Naples red!

Shameless release of Contraband will be the first ever version of the film fully UNCUT in the UK & will feature an exclusive animation LENTICULAR card bringing to life one of the film most iconic violent scene of the film.

Extras:

- Animated lenticular card
- English & Italian Audio with English Subtitles
- Alternative Italian Opening Credits - Shameless trailers

Nice to see this little gem in the UK bit slow for some people and some pretty strong gore/nudity on show Fabio Testi makes a good lead and it is good to see this in its original language.

While a lot of fans may be familiar with Lucio Fulci's work in the field of horror with masterpieces such as Zombie flesh-eaters (aka Zombie 2) House by the Cemetery and The Beyond; Fulci had also worked in other genres including the Giallo with such classics as Don't torture a duckling and Lizard in a woman's skin and here with crime film with the bloody and brutal Contraband.

The film stars Fabio Testi (revolver, what have you done to solange?) as a cigarette smuggler out for revenge and caught in a brutal mafia war with a rival gang set on taking over his business in order to move into the drugs trade.

As with his horror, Fulci is not a director bound by restraint or good taste and the film is an OTT crime drama with enough eye popping gore and brutality to make Scarface Blush.

The Shameless release looks similar to the Blue underground in terms of PQ and claims to be five minutes longer. It's been a while since I last watched the film but it looked similar to me as well. Unlike the Blue underground disc it has Italian audio though it is somewhat poor quality.

Overall it may not be a massive upgrade for fans who own the BU release but its a disc well worth seeking out if your curious about seeing the film. It certainly never disappoints!

Contraband further builds Lucio Fulci's reputation as having impeccable talent as a storyteller alongside his other classics Don't Torture a Duckling and New York Ripper. But it is the fact that such a competent professional managed to be also so fiercely unpretentious in regards to taste that has given Fulci such a high status among Italian genre fans. The result is a body of work which include watershed gore, blackly witty humour and some truly astonishing camerawork. The pan before the head lead decimation effect is truly Scorsese level filmmaking as is the strobe lighting sequence in the disco, predating black swan some thirty years. In short, Fulci and the film camera were one, producing visual splendour out of even the most meagre of budgets. Some pacing problems and one incredibly annoying kid prevent this from being a flat out low budget masterpiece, but this still remains a sadly undervalued poliziotteschi thriller.

Shameless' DVD beats out Blue Underground's release slightly with novel packaging and a first ever release of the original Italian audio. But please Shameless, i understand your niche constraints but couldn't we have had at least a booklet possibly containing the Contraband entry from Steven Thrower's 'Beyond Terror' or an interview with Fulci's always informative daughter Antonella. Something similar to your New York Ripper release would make this the invaluable edition of Contraband to Fulci fanatics such as myself no doubt (till the blu ray). Till then, wait till this comes down to seven or eight pounds. Still a must purchase though for all exploitation fans.
