contemporary weaving 27 Jan 2012
By K. Platt TOP 50 REVIEWER
Margo Selby's name is synonymous with contemporary weaving with style. This book seems to reflect Selby's style beautifully. It starts with a grounding in materials and inspiration, showing yarns and how to develop a colour palette - loved this section. Colour, construction, texture, keeping records and finishing techniques are all included here. In the next chapter, colour is looked at in more detail where Margo looks at many different striped combinations. The meat of the book is the collections. A series of striking weaving designs based loosely on stripes and using different yarns to effect. There are colourful designs, white on white and black on white. Each design is given half a page and there is a simple chart. A lovely book for fans of Margo Selby and for lovers of weaving everywhere. Excellent production, design and photos. Margo Selby is a British woven textiles designer with a bold approach to creating luxurious and modern fabrics and it is this approach which is explored within the book.
One of my favourite aspects of this book is the fact that the yarns used are shown in detail as well as providing a description of their qualities. Margo herself states "As a weaver, it is as much fun sourcing and collecting yarns as it is to weave them together. Mixing your yarns can result in rich contrasts in both colour and texture; it is so interesting to see how the fibres react to each other as they are woven and then finished in different ways." This is a truth that is sometimes missing in other weave pattern books I have come across and, certainly for the novice weaver, the guidance is most appreciated. Overall, this book has become a new favourite for inspiration and ideas - and another excuse to increase my yarn stash! This review first appeared on lintondirectyarns website.

Nice to browse for inspiration 25 April 2012
By birte bøgh - Published on Amazon.com
This book is completely the same as "Color and Texture in weaving" by the same author except for the title, and the picture on the front page.
The book has a great number of bright pictures of samples accompanied by threading plans, pattern and yarn etc. The lay-out is inviting and it is easy to follow the guidelines. It is a book which is nice to browse once or twice for inspiration, but I fail to see that the patterns are in any way exceptional or for that matter especially contemporary. I don't feel that this book adds anything of substance to my weaving library.
