Book Description

29 Aug 2008
Studying Spanish? Spending a year-out in Spain? Or maybe going to work there? Then you'll need this handbook of contemporary Spain and the Spanish language. Revised and expanded, and packed with essential information on politics, economy and institutions, it covers the basics that are taken for granted by most Spaniards. This new edition includes recent events such as the 2004 Madrid bombings and the subsequent election of a socialist government, ETA's 2006 ceasefire and its later revocation, and the country's recent economic success. Each chapter also contains a Spanish/English glossary giving guidance on the use of specialist terms in context. This handbook is invaluable for all those with a wish to learn more about Spain, its language and its people.

4.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary Spain 5 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
I've been living in Spain for a few years now but I have never found a Spaniard who has been able to tell me what the difference is between this or that court and as I watch the news I've been unable to work out which of the Regional political parties was left or right of centre etc. This book gave me those answers and many, many more. It is also bang up to date with mention being made of political, economic or social themes which are still very much in the news as I type.

I did wonder, a couple of times, if some of the detail was completely accurate but it was only ever in the detail - the broad sweep of the information certainly tied in with my own experiences and often allowed me to grasp the relevance of events that passed me by at the time.

The writing isn't exactly exciting but it's clearly, plainly and intelligently written. The chapter headings and layout were also logical and clear with it being easy to go back to check this or that fact.

A wholehearted recommendation for anyone who needs to understand Spain's present and recent past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommendable 3 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
I think the previous reviewer does this book a slight injustice. I bought the book rather reluctantly after reading that review - I thought I might be able to scrape something of value from it - and have been very pleasantly surprised. I am a Spanish-to-English translator based in Spain and I was looking for a book offering lots of information about Spanish society/politics/education etc. in English (so offering me understanding, but also comparison with the British equivalents and the translations that an equivalent Spanish book would lack). I have Institutions of Modern Spain (Newton), which is good but very out of date now. Contemporary Spain landed on my doorstep this morning and I have flicked through its contents and read the first two chapters: it is going to be very useful for me in my work indeed. It is much weightier than I feared (though it reads well).
