Product Description

Review

This is an excellent textbook as well as a great scholarly read. Collins has brought together a very distinguished group of scholars to deal with some of the most pressing security challenges of our time from a theoretical and historical perspective. (Amitav Acharya, American University, Washington DC )

This volume links theory to substance. It offers diverse and competing conceptual lenses for thinking about the nature of security and specific challenges. Readers will come away educated, not merely informed. (Richard Ned Lebow, Dartmouth College and London School of Economics and Political Science )

Since the end of the Cold War and following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the security studies field has been in dire need of a core textbook for undergraduates. It now has one. Even as the international security outlook continues to change at an unsettling pace, this bigger and better edition adeptly tracks and tackles those changes in ways that will bring out the most creativity in teachers and students alike. (Geoffrey Wiseman, University of Southern California )

An excellent introduction. The collection is particularly useful in bringing together major recent approaches in security studies and explaining their philosophical background and practical implications. (Roland Dannreuther, University of Edinburgh )

This textbook frames security within the boundaries of issues and perspectives, making the security world (relatively) easy to understand. A great introduction for undergraduates who are just starting off in the world of security studies. Excellent bibliography for further research. Well worth the money.

Useful but basic 4 May 2010
Format:Paperback
This book covers the areas in international security sufficiently but has a rather irratating habit of going into detail about quite obvious facts. It comes across almost like an A-level text book and only provides an introduction to the various topics.
