5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book 2 Aug 2008
This book has given me access to numerous authors works which I probably wouldn't have read otherwise.

They are generally short extracts rather than full works (although where the original works themselves were short, they are I think included in full), typically from around a page long (for the poems) to several pages for the extracts from novels.

Great for reading a particular work extract in a single evening.

The book has translations of words that are likely to be unusual at the bottom of each page, although I think the author's opinions of the words a user might struggle with don't always match mine. But that's just a minor criticism.

I think I really wanted to give it 4.5 stars rather than 5 because there are maybe slightly more poems than need be... I'd have preferred more 'literary' stuff, but it's only a minor gripe. Not enough to warrant going down to 4 stars, so it can have 5.

It really is great having so many different and diverse great works covered in one book without getting overloaded with any particular one writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars useful for students 3 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A good addition to the McGraw-Hill range of textbooks that appear to be devised for the American college market, complete with brief introductions and bios of the writers, glossaries at the foot of each page (though these are rather variable, and the 'intermediate' student will still need a good dictionary at hand) and some questions in Spanish at the end, no doubt intended for class use. Some classic short stories are here, and the range of writers is impressive. Quite an emphasis on 'magical realism', too. The diligent student will find this a helpful introduction to the 20th century terrain.

4.0 out of 5 stars First class selection 15 Nov 2011
The selection is probably the most interesting I have encountered in parallel texts and readers and provides a reasonable challenge for someone like myself with only middling reading ability who wishes to improve their reading skills. I would have found the book more useful if it had included more of the vocabulary that I wasn't familiar with- having read Marquez and Llosa in the original Spanish with the help of English translations I found that I already knew half or more of the words in the footer vocabulary lists (making them as much a distraction as an aid) whereas I had not met a similar number of other words, some not in the larger Collins Spanish dictionary. A glossary at the end, or an attempt to standardise vocabulary against words that appear in common Spanish - English or Spanish dictionaries would have increased the value of the book both for reading enjoyment and as a learning tool.

Apart from this concern the compilation is a good single volume introduction to some very fine authors, for example Aguedas, Poniatowska, who are not readily available or expensive in single editions and translations.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great resource for advanced Spanish learners 8 Mar 2005
By Nikola - Published on Amazon.com
This book contains short stories, poems, and excerpts from a variety of well-known latin american authors such as Octavio Paz, Isabel Allende, Carlos Fuentes, and Pablo Neruda. Each selection includes an introduction of the author, pre-reading notes, footnotes of difficult words with English translation, and post-reading questions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Muy bien! 21 Sep 2008
By J. Almonte - Published on Amazon.com
I bought this as some sort of follow through after finishing my reading of the Classic Spanish Stories and Plays (Spanish Reader Series).

Browsing through some of the works, it does seem to me that the reader must at least be upper intermediate or advanced in Spanish to fully enjoy this anthology. I understand that the works are unabridged, in their original length and form, so they're a little harder for the average learner.

I recommend getting this book if you plan to buy Classic Spanish Stories and Plays, which you may read first to get a good handle on Spanish then move on to the Contemporary Latin American Literature.

4.0 out of 5 stars Text discrepancy? 10 Oct 2009
By L. Bankerd - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
We bought this book because it is being used in a class we are taking. It contains a wealth of short stories by well known and respected Latin authors. It is always good to have original literature in the language one is studying and this book is not exception. The study guides and footnotes are helpful as well. We have encountered a problem in the first story we are reading, "Dos Palabras." We have the story in anther book and it seems that there is a discrepancy between the two texts in the beginning of the story. The wording in this book doesn't make much sense. Perhaps there is an error in editing.

Buy two copies, give one to your best Spanish-speaking friend, and keep the other to give to your grandchildren after you've worn it out.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 24 Feb 2014

This is an affordable and excellent resource to teach (and to learn) 20th Century Latin American literature at the College level.
