Product Description

Review

"Thoroughly recommended for all conflict resolution workers whether in academe, government or other parliamentary organisations, civil service, military departments, and NGOs and their supporters. Indeed, anyone prepared to study it in any depth would be amply rewarded."
Medicine, Conflict and Survival

"There is no more definitive text. It is impressive in its clarity, comprehensiveness, and ability to incorporate a historical overview of each area as well as the latest thinking and debates."
Oliver Richmond, Director, Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, University of St Andrews

"This new third edition confirms the stellar place of this book on the bookshelf of every scholar and practitioner in the field of conflict resolution and peacebuilding. Nowhere else will you find such a comprehensive overview of the history of the field and its current methodologies, as well as entirely new chapters dedicated to the most pertinent issues of today, including the environment, gender, religion and the media. A must read – a hugely important resource for us all."
Mari Fitzduff, Brandeis University

"Contemporary Conflict Resolution has become an institution for teachers, students and researchers of armed conflict, conflict resolution and peacebuilding. This third edition – significantly revised and expanded, with a number of entirely new chapters – provides an excellent survey of the key theories, debates and cases in this area of scholarship. The inclusion of chapters on the environment , religion, culture, the media and language demonstrates that this volume is as innovative as it is comprehensive. It manages to be both a textbook and a volume that projects coherent and sometimes provocative arguments."
Edward Newman, University of Birmingham

"This is a thorough and well–written introduction to contemporary conflict resolution, which offers a distinctive perspective based on the notion of ′cosmopolitan conflict resolution′. It will be of great interest to students of peace and conflict studies."
Adrian G. V. Hyde–Price, University of Bath

Format: Paperback
This was a core text for me for my conflict analysis and resolution module at the University of Kent. At first it seems a little overwhelming because of the sheer amount of content in there, however with a little time you get used to the format and the layout of the text. The authors are experts in their field and cover all the material, both theory and practical, in depth and with contemporary examples. It can be heavy going at times and some chapters may require a couple of read-throughs to wrap your head around the concepts. I was able to contribute in seminars and revise for my exam using this book as my base and it provided me with a brilliant understanding of the material.

If you need a book on Conflict Resolution for your course or for revision purposes then you cannot go wrong with this one!

I used this book as a reference for my post-graduate studies as it is regarded in some circles to be the definitive text on the subject. It has some interesting concepts and theories, and can be a useful guide once the reader has taken 4 or 5 passes at it with a highlighter pen.

This book is, however, overly dull and repetitive. The prose employed is very dense, and many sentences are so long that they are nonsensical. The book could easily have been reduced by one third with some intervention from even the most mediocre of editors.

I'm of the opinion that academic texts should educate and excite students, especially when the subject discussed has the potential to be so fascinating. It seems that the authors do not share this viewpoint.

HASH(0x940b996c) out of 5 stars A Peace and Justice Student Review 6 April 2013
By Luis - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I am an graduating senior, so my humble opinion should only count from the perspective of a peace and justice studies student.

I just wanted to say that this was one of the main books we used in my conflict transformation/peacebuilding course during my undergrad. My overall opinion is that it was a very strong and helpful textbook. I have never had a textbook in my life that once I read the first and second chapter, I couldn't stop reading it.

I must say I was dissapointed by their treatment of environmental ethics and conflict. There was little mention of nonathropocentrism and how that might change the field. Instead, they refer to the field in very anthropocentric terms, which is the status quo, but they failed to at least acknowledge it. Also, they lightly touch on the history of nonviolence in an early chapter, and then they shelf it for the rest of the book, which was unfortunate.

I find it helpful that they do a treatment of the field that recognizes and respect also other theories, as well as non-western, non-northern thinking at certain points. It does a good job at responding to critiques from outside the field. It also opens a way to see the the contemporary challenges field, and where future work will need to be done in order to advance the field. For example, they begin scratching the surface at points about cyberpeacemaking, and talking about the role of social media in regards to contemporary conflict resolution. However, it is still such a novel idea, that they provide a theoretical basic of what is happening but still recognize as a new frontier.

I am glad I got to read this book before graduating. I feel it has helped me frame the field better, and the knowledge I have gained from it will serve valuable to me as a prospective peacebuilder. I think this textbook should be a must.

Excellent reference tome. This was purchased as a required text but is has an honored place on my book shelf. It is a great source for background information on several regional conflicts, some which continue to this day.

As contribution to peacework, it is recommended to leaders as another route to resolving issues without resorting to war.
Something that deserves regard.
