What does "Contemporary" mean? This collection of writings begins with Busoni, who died nealy a century ago, but finds no room for Philip Glass, Boulez or John Adams, let alone Berio, Nono or Scelsi. On the other hand, American composers of the 20th century are amply represented, with pieces specially written for this volume by Stefan Wolpe, Henry Brant and Charles Wuorinen, among others, possibly well-known in their native land, probably worth discovering, but more representative of contemporary music than, say, Dutilleux? Overambitious in scope, it's hard to see who this can satisfy.
