Product Description

Dr. Arthur Covington may hold the key to the most important discovery in the history of humankind. He is, however, not the only interested party.

If he is to survive treachery and attempts on his life in his bid to escape a secure, high-tech facility, he will have to rely on others - but who can he trust?

Underground, an explosion rocks the facility. Someone drops a viral agent.

In a new world where none can be trusted, Covington's life hangs in the balance. It's a race against time...and the end of the world...because it's not just the living he has to fight against. The dead are rising. Dead men walk the halls below the earth, and the only thing keeping him from being contaminated is his gas mask...and it won't last forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reminds me of something... 16 Nov 2012

I couldn't help it - I kept thinking of Resident Evil when I was reading Contaminated by Suzanne Robb. The story mainly takes place inside of an underground silo that contains several research projects, and when something goes wrong in one of the labs, several employees find themselves fighting through a zombie outbreak in an attempt to get out of the silo alive.

To her credit, Robb did create some interesting characters that were nothing like the ones in the movie, and I found the hell that she put them through quite entertaining; however, after reading a lot of Robb's other work - particularly Z-Boat - I was less than impressed with her recent zombie story. It just seemed to lack the originality of her previous horror stories.

Now, I'm not saying this isn't a good zombie story...I'm just saying that this isn't Robb's best work, but I am still hoping that there will be a sequel to show readers what happened topside of the silo. In fact, I wouldn't mind a prequel that gives readers more background on the research facility itself - especially concerning the competition.

If you did enjoy the movie, and you relish scenarios that include a gauntlet of undead terror, you might appreciate Robb's take on trapped survivors.

Good background stories to all the main characters, some brilliantly delivered information re a "planet" and why it should be studied.

Essentially I thought this was a great premise for a story but it seemed to lose its way about a 3rd of the way in... it went from space exploration mission with a bit of corporate espionage to rampaging zombies in a locked down building.
Lot of differing angles to a story made it a little confusing at times and a bit repetitive in the description of how secure the building was - ok I got it... they cant get out! but they left a hatch open allowing the world to get infected??

The odd spelling mistake drove me a bit bonkers (ax vs axe - make up your mind!) plus the various unexplained story lines, such as; decomposition after only a few hours, why? what was the explosion? what else were they testing? experiments? who were the differing espionage companies? what happened to the arse with the yacht (yes a yacht!)?

Unfortunately nothing was seriously addressed or finished off, the ending was not good, like a drop of a cliff or "whoops I ran out of words".

Ultimately I really enjoyed the writing style and there were some fabulous concepts, this wont stop me trying this author again, but this story needs an overall or maybe a sequel??

The Ministry of Zombies was offered a free review copy of this baby from the author & seeing as I reviewed Suzanne Robb's bestseller Z-Boat we gave this one a go.

Firstly, this is a very different story. It still has the same tight dialogue & superb editing which are becoming features of Robb's work but I found the whole scope of the story to be much broader, almost strategic.

Dr. Arthur Covington holds the keys to a vital discovery but as you would expect, with such a discovery comes chaos and foul play. I won't include any spoilers here but its one hell of twisting & turning plot.

Not an easy one to predict which is a great thing in a novel.

This is not the longest book, some 63K words I reckon but there is a lot packed in there. We have super secret high-tech bases, assassins in every corner & almost an X-Files style `who can you trust' scenario.

Things really start to `get zombie' when a virus outbreaks leads to the appearance of everyone's favourite monster. It's why we're here & the walking dead don't disappoint.

Claustrophobic, face-paced & I think more edgy than many books out there, thoroughly enjoyed this one.
Favourite line - "The one legged thing made its way over and was trying to climb Arthur's leg"!!!

Dark and disturbing stuff from one of the most exciting new voices in Canadian horror and science-fiction.
