1.0 out of 5 stars Cosmetic Concerns, 4 Jun 2003
By Mr. W. M. Habgood (wimborne, dorset United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having spent the last year changing my lifestyle (and the contents of my bathroom) for the better, I purchased this book in the hope that it would offer me a one stop reference to all the safe and harmful ingredients used in cosmetics. Upon opening the book, however, I was considerably disappointed. I turned straight to the entry for "Sodium Laurel Sulphate" well documented as a harmful cosmetic ingredient (most notably by the master of this research, Samuel Epstein) only to discover that it included it as safe according to most scientific research. I didn't read much further, having been put off by my concerns about the factual accuracy of the books content. Then again maybe I should have been more open minded - the research cited in this book could be right and the others wrong!

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful reference, 21 Feb 2006
Ruth Winter's 'Dictionary' is an excellent starting point for learning more about cosmetic ingredients and their uses. Misconceptions can arise if you take everything in the book as gospel; information about some ingredients is sometimes based on much more concentrated form than would be found in cosmetics. (After all, everything is harmful in sufficient quantities - including water!) It's worth while to bear in mind that not all research is accurate and unbiased, and I believe this book should be read more in terms of 'Ruth Winter's opinion is that:...' rather than 'It is an absolute fact that:...'.

Used for the purposes of providing definitions of different ingredients, however, this is extremely useful. The book is easy to navigate, well laid out and contains a huge wealth of information.
