Product Description

Product Description

Consulting for Real People: a client centred approach for leaders and change agents 2/e shows you how to become truly client-centred by empowering your client and supporting them right through to the point where the new behaviour replaces the old. Formerly titled '||'''Client-Centred Consulting: A practical guide for internal advisers and trainers'||''' this highly successful book has been fully updated to reflect advances in the field. The scope of the book has also been expanded to include issues, dilemmas and the operational styles of both internal and external change agents. Other new topics covered include change management issues for leaders, managing large-scale organisational changes, and ways in which change agents can empower themselves and their clients. The book begins with an exploration of all aspects of change management from the perspective of consultant, manager or team leader. It goes on to explore the range of consulting styles available and the structure of the consultant-client relationship. Finally it explains why successful change agents must have a high level of personal power and self-esteem and it explores ways in which these can be acquired.

I was trained to use the models outlined in this excellent publication 30 years ago, and have used them daily ever since. Having spent a lifetime in HR, Development and Learning I feel qualified to say that this is the best approach you will ever find to working as a consultant, leading and facilitating change and acting without the use of power and authority. The approaches outlined in the book are closely based on the work of Karl Rogers, the pioneering child psychiatrist who overturned the whole approach to behavioural issues by developing a "Client Centered" approach - ie starting where the client is rather than where you would like or imagine them to be.

The strength of the model used is that it is totally holistic - it covers every conceivable situation that a consultant or leader will ever encounter,and....it does not have a "sell-by date" - this is not some gimmicky shallow "psychobabble" but rather a deep and considered approach that seeks to help us to understand and work with the very essence of human nature.

The book clearly demonstrates that real consultants who work with real people, focus on their clients needs and help them to make decisions in an holistic way. It demonstrates the importance of listening and not prescribing, of empowering, not overpowering. It clearly outlines the behaviours I need to concentrate on to be a better consultant, and to be a better manager. An invaluable handbook for anyone who lives in the real world of struggling to manage change in organisations.

I read this book as a practioner working in a consulting role. I found it easy to read and it helped me really understand that the people I work with are clients, and the way I work with them is as important as the technical skills I offer. For the first time I realised that I don't always have to act as an expert and be prescriptive. I now work very hard to ensure that my clients really retain ownership of their problem. And it seems to work.
