Product Description

Review

"It would also be useful to the large animal practitioner covering the odd consulting shift and the very part–time small animal vet." (Vet Record, 1 December 2011)

"Sidebars of ‘low cost options′ and ‘what if it dosen′t get better′ notes accompany color photos and in–depth discussions perfect for any veterinary reference collection." (The Midwest Book Review, 1 November 2011)

"Each of them is described using a standard and very logical format. As needed, clear tables and algorithms are provided . . . An affordable must before jumping into the big wild veterinary world." (Tomorrow′s Vet , 2011)

"In summary, this book is a real find for small animal general practitioners (in particular new graduates) and clinical veterinary students; it would be a worthwhile addition to any practice bookshelf as it is bursting with handy hints, photographs and helpful appendix tables. It is certainly value for money." (Veterinary Record, 16 July 2011)

"Photographs, drawings and diagrams, color–keyed boxes, and other features make the information particularly clear and accessible." (Booknews, 1 June 2011)

Product Description

Focusing on ′day one competencies′, this book offers essential guidance to the most common problems encountered in small animal general practice. Addressing 100 core scenarios, it is ideal for the undergraduate or newly qualified vet, and for those seeking an up–to–date refresher. Organized by presenting sign (diarrhoea, itching) or disease (diabetes mellitus, pancreatitis), and with colour illustration throughout, each chapter explains:
  • how to make a diagnosis
  • which interventions are most appropriate in general practice
  • what the vet should say to the client before and after examination

The authors also offer invaluable advice on other key topics such as annual health checks, neutering and euthanasia, and they tackle the tough questions: What if it doesn′t get better? What is the low cost option? When should I refer?

Never before has so much practical information been brought together in a single volume. Like having an experienced or specialist clinician standing by your side in the consulting room, 100 Top Consultations will become a trusted companion for students and practitioners alike.

I am a UK based vet with 23 years experience. During that time I have read many books on different veterinary topics. As such, I rarely see a new approach in veterinary books. This book is an entirely new approach and fills a valuable need within the profession in the UK.
Most vet textbooks and textbook chapters are written by specialists seeing second opinion (i.e. 'difficult' cases) which require a completely different approach to first opinion cases. Following their advice to perform a 'minimum database' which often includes full blood work-up, radiographs and all manner of other tests, would lead to huge bills that the average first opinion client cannot afford.
This book is different and is written in a common-sense and practical way. The information is accessable and concise. The 'When to refer', 'Low cost options' and 'What if it does not get better sections' are particularly useful.
I employ a lot of new graduates and plan to give a copy of this book to each of them, along with our 'practice manual'.
This is a great book full of practical tips and I am sure it will help many new graduates bridge the gap between their theoretical knowledge and the very practical aspects of their first job. Older hands might also pick up some tips too.

This format might also translate into a large animal and an equine text - I look forward to those too!

As a person with a medical background, I thought it would be interesting to review a reference book pertaining to veterinary medicine, especially since human medical references such as this book abound especially for the postgraduate exams. I also thought it would be interesting if there were drug references and which drugs could be used in both humans and small animal practice.

I was quite impressed by the clear layout and consistency in their approach. Aside from the introductory chapter which is obviously meant to return to the basics of history taking and examination, the remaining chapters have the following layout:

Clinical problem:
Pathophysiology where applicable and differential diagnosis
Diagnostic approaches
Treatment
Approaches to non-response of management/compliactions
Low cost options
Referrals to second opinion/specialist centers.

A formulary is included where required ie drug indications. It is interesting to note common medicines are identical to human ones with dosing per kg being the main area of difference.

This is obviously not meant to be an in depth reference but more an office companion. in covering "100 top consultations" the overwhelming focus is on dog and cat problems. The dedicated sections to rabbit, hamster guinea pig and tortoise in the non-dog/cat section tries to cover plenty of ground, but this feels like a final round up "to complete the picture".

There are plenty of photographic plates (illustrating the problem) and tables. Sections in chapters are highlighted by colours.

I used to have a similar book in my undergraduate days for my medical exams and would cover a few chapters in the evening. At least one occupies my shelf in the office. I think this would ably perform a similar function for my veterinary counterpart for small animal practice.

I bought this book and was very excited by it. This book is very clear layout, colour photographs and some radiograph (xrays) to show help the condition of each animal and injury/illness and it also give you an overview of the cause of illness, the history and also the clinical symptoms. I liked the way that the book tells you the different diagnoses and the specific diagnostic techniques that can be used. There is also a bit about the low cost option, which would be aimed at people who cannot pay out lots of money on their animals. The last chapters of the book deal with referring the animal to a specialist, how to do it and also what to do if they animal does not recover.

In the very front of the book there is a section which provides advice on medical conditions and the benefits of spaying and castration your animals.
This book is written by vets Peter Hill, Sheena Warman, Geoff Showcross. The book is written mainly toward veterinary surgeon, veterinary students and veterinary nurses. It is still quite suitable for people with a strong interest in knowing about their animals medical issues and treatment.

I think this book is excellent. My daughter who read through and gave me the notes for the review is hopefully going to become a veterinary nurse. The book showed her in depth some of the illness that she could come across. Also it has showed how she can diagnostic our own animals with out paying out lots of money for a vet to tell us what is wrong with my animals. I would give this book 9 out of ten. As I think you need to know a bit about the illness before you read this.
