"Interesting and exciting.... Roger′s capacity to blAnd personal insight, conceptual thinking, frameworks and professional experience is truly impressive." —Richard Beckhard, coauthor of Changing the Essence

Product Description

Foreword by Peter Block

This autobiography of one of the founders of the organization development (OD) profession offers a candid and personal view of both Roger Harrison′s own development as a consultant and of the growing OD profession––from its origins in the 1950s through to the present.

Harrison offers an insightful look at his personal and professional life, from his years as a rebel associate professor at Yale during the heyday of group dynamics and sensitivity training, through the ups and downs of his consultancy in the United States and Europe––as he struggled with issues of competence, arrogance, power, money, and partnership––to the impact his deepening spirituality had on his work and life. He discusses the practice dilemmas that all OD consultants face and summarizes what he has learned in more than thirty–five years as a consultant.

New and experienced organization development consultants in public, private, and nonprofit organizations, as well as HRD practitioners and adult educators will find this book both an inspiring portrait of a pioneering OD practitioner and a revealing introduction to the consulting life.

5.0 out of 5 stars For all aspiring consultants...., 30 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Consultant's Journey - A Dance of Work & Spirit: A Dance of Work and Spirit (Jossey Bass Business and Management Series) (Hardcover)
It should be mandatory reading for all organisational consultants. Roger Harrison is open and honest about his work and life and explores those situations where he has experienced deep learning. Consultant's Journey provides an excellent model for the sharing of personal learning - its rare to come across a book like this which describes the difficulties as well as the successes. I found it very moving, inspirational to read and could identify with many of the personal situations and dilemmas he describes. It is written with humour and humility.

4.0 out of 5 stars Insights into a consultant's life, 29 May 2009
This review is from: The Consultant's Journey - A Dance of Work & Spirit: A Dance of Work and Spirit (Jossey Bass Business and Management Series) (Hardcover)
Greatly enjoying Roger Harrison's "autobiography". The personal highs and lows and self-reflections about his motives and behavior over a long and distinguished career. Made me think about my own experiences as a consultant.

How great is it when we are not afraid to look at the past with honesty! The Consultants Journey is filled with warmth and realism, it reminds us that we are human and we are often at our best when we remind ourselves of this all to forgotten fact.
