Review

"A fascinating concept, full of knowledgable gems put in the most frank of styles... A book to sample when the time is right and to come back to when another time is right, maybe again and again."

David A Simmonds, Building Engineer magazine

Product Description

Construction law can be a minefield of complications and misunderstandings in which professionals need answers which are pithy and straightforward but also legally rigorous. In Construction Contracts: Questions and Answers, specialist in construction law David Chappell answers architects' and builders' common construction contract questions.

Questions range in content and include:

  • extensions of time
  • liquidated damages
  • loss and/or expense
  • practical completion
  • defects
  • valuation
  • certificates and payment
  • architects' instructions
  • adjudication and fees.

Chappell's authoritative and practical advice answers questions ranging from simple queries, such as which date should be put on a contract, through to more complex issues, such as whether the contractor is entitled to take possession of a section of the work even though it is the contractor's fault that possession is not practicable.

In answering genuine questions on construction contracts, Chappell has created an invaluable resource on which not only architects, but also project managers, contractors, QSs, employers and others involved in construction can depend.

David Chappell is a prolific author and certainly an expert in his field. This latest book contains lots of very informative scenarios from his own personal experience.

As a Construction Contracts Consultant myself I can relate to the problems that arise day after day in the construction and engineering industries. And maybe the book's title should more accurately have reflected what it can do for the reader in terms of helping them to solve problems.

Perhaps "200 Construction Problems Reviewed and Answered" might have been better.

As usual with this type of book it talks about matters from the Employer and Contractor and Architect's points of view and largely ignores the problems of Specialist Sub-Contractors. Which I personally believe is a failing given that virtually everything on any site is done by Specialist Sub-Contractors!

Oh, and by the way this is definitely a case of don't judge a book by its cover. Whoever designed it?

A Good Book 10 April 2012

Really useful book to have for any practising contract administrator. Only negative is that the book constantly refers to the CA as the architect which is perhaps a bit limiting considering the range of people who can administer a contract.
