Pleasantly surprised! 8 Sep 2007

I was not sure what to expect with this CD. Even though I really liked Constantine on Idol, so many of those contestants have gone on after the show to release mediocre CDs, making one wonder how they got so far on the show. Not so with this release! His vocals are fabulous, the songs are great...I absolutely love this CD! I'm impressed he started his own label so he could produce just what he wanted. I can't wait for the next one to be released!

Constantine Doesn't Work For Clive Davis 7 Aug 2007
By Grammar Police - Published on
Format: Audio CD
I ran out this morning to get my Constantine CD and as soon as I started listening, my first thought was, "This is just like Constantine." You can tell he didn't have anybody telling him what to do on this album or how to do it. You can tell he picked the songs and you can tell he sings them his own way. I think his versatility is refreshing. I can really love an artist's hit song, but oftentimes I get really bored with the rest of the CD because every song sounds the same. Not the case with Constantine. He mixes accoustic with rock with pop and much more.

I'm not going to say I love every song, because I don't. I don't like the rocker songs on there - but he keeps that to a minimum. My pick for the single wouldn't have been "Everybody Loves," although, I think it's catchy. I think it's too bubblegum and who's he trying to sell this to? If he wants to go mainstream, I would have picked something grittier, like "Heaven Help The Lonely." It's a great song and shows his vocals. And when he talks in the middle... I get goosebumps. V-E-R-Y sexy.

I'm totally amazed he did this Indie. One thing that helps this CD is Constantine's band. The guitarist is incredible. And as everybody knows, a singer is only as good as his band. Great CD. Congratulations, Constantine!

Very pleasantly surprised 16 Aug 2010
By Doctor CD - Published on
Constantine Maroulis was voted off American Idol in 2005, before being a rocker was feasible on this "talent" show. He ended up in 6th place, hence his label's name "6th Place Records". His first solo CD, the self-titled "Constantine", surfaced in 2007 and boasts an impressive assortment of established talent to help him make his own mark. Constantine seems to have found his niche somewhere in the Rob Thomas vibe, trying to infuse a bit of soul in his otherwise straight up pop rock.

The debut CD has its flaws and fillers, but has more pleasant surprises than negatives. First, I forgot how good his voice sounds. Constantine has an excellent voice for this genre and he knows how to please by reaching up for the dramatic notes at the appropriate times. Second, he's recruited Philly songwriter Jim Boggia to pen a handful of songs; Jim is an awesome songwriter.

The first song had me worried. "Girl Like You" sounds like a Rob Thomas-Santana leftover, and is pretty generic and bland to me. I also don't find his efforts to rock out sincere; "Child, You're The Revolution" and "I Thought It Was Something" fall flat. But "Several Thousand" (also heard on Jim Boggia's "Fidelity Is the Enemy") and "Sister, Sister" are slow to mid-tempo numbers that sink their teeth in deep and keep hold of you. "Right To My Head" is another great mid-tempo track with a nice mix of acoustic and electric guitars and sing-a-long chorus. "So Long" is a simple acoustic appeal that finds Constantine pining for a lost love, but he hits all the right buttons and the sparse arrangement puts his voice in the spotlight...and it shines. "Heaven Help The Lonely" is a nice upbeat track near the end of the CD, and you'll be singing this chorus for the rest of the day.

Funny - I usually gravitate to the more upbeat numbers when listening to CDs, but for Constantine, I seem to prefer the ballads and mid-tempo numbers. If you were a fan of him on American Idol, the CD is a no brainer; for the rest of you, few pop rock fans will be disappointed with this release. It should have been a much bigger success! I look forward to the follow up...

"Constantine" CD 1 Jun 2010
By Dennis - Published on

After seeing Constantine recently in "Rock of Ages," I remembered how much I loved his voice and decided to buy his CD to check it out for myself (don't know why I didn't 3 years ago when it was originally released). I must say that, even though I was a huge fan of his on AI, I was still surprised at how good this CD actually is-maybe because it wasn't very successful. I believe that he has one of the most beautiful and versatile voices out there and this CD really illustrates that, especially in the song "So Long," which gives me chills everytime I listen to it! It is a CD that you can listen to over and over again in its entirety and not have to skip a single song. As much as I loved him in "Rock of Ages," I sincerely believe that this is where he belongs-as a recording artist. He is MUCH more than a Broadway singer and his vocal talent is undeniable. The only minor negative comment I could make is that some of the lyrics are a tad cheesy. I sure hope the poor sales don't discourage him from releasing another CD sometime soon; I would be the first to go out and buy it! My hope in writing this review is that others will go out and buy this CD so it gets the exposure it deserves. Jill McMahon
