West Word

Part love story, part ghost story . . . an unusual and enthralling tale which keeps the reader guessing till the last page.

Product Description

Struggling to find direction in life, Ruaridh MacBran jumps at the chance of abandoning his career in the city to take over his family's near-bankrupt estate in the remote Western Highlands. With the aid of his friend and neighbour Sandy, he starts the process of transforming the run-down estate house, Tigh-na-Fitheach, into a viable business. But the house proves to be more than the empty shell it appears, and Ruaridh's plans must be made to fit with the aspirations of more than just its living inhabitants. Feeding on a rich tradition of Scottish folklore, 'A Conspiracy of Ravens' is a moving tale of impossible love, of friendship and of family; but above all, it is a story of hope, of realising dreams, and of new beginnings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing tale, 14 July 2011
This review is from: A Conspiracy of Ravens (Paperback)
I've read this book twice and enjoyed it just as much the second time round as it's an intriguing and interesting piece of fiction. Whilst the end isn't exactly a surprise (as it can't be), the narrative and character development are more than enough to keep you turning those pages. I also like it when authors pick their characters' names for a reason, and not just randomly... Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ravenous for more, 26 April 2011
This review is from: A Conspiracy of Ravens (Paperback)
A thoroughly good read which kept me turning the pages. I don't usually read books by an author unless I have read some of his / her work before or unless someone has recommended them but something attracted me to this one and I was glad that it did.
Following the death of his father, city boy Ruaridh inherits the family home (mansion) and decides to try turn it into a rural hotel offering country sports, with the help of a close friend. At the same time, although possibly not looking for love, he stumbles across it and falls for the dark haired beauty, Brenna.
It's a story steeped in Scottish folklore, though no prior knowledge is needed to enjoy it. Mr Sillars wonderfully describes the beauty and tranquillity of the Scottish highlands making it easy to picture the scene. If I had one criticism it would be that the book was too short. I felt it could have gone on, but you will have to read it to find out why it didn't!
