Book Description

21 Dec 2012 Routledge Series in Conservation and Museology

This book is a comprehensive resource covering the principles and practice of the conservation and restoration of furniture. A review of the historical development of furniture introduces a wide range of structural types and materials that may be encountered, including wood, ivory, turtleshell, horn and metals, as well as decorative surfaces such as paint, japanning, lacquer and gilding. The nature and behaviour of these materials is explained and used as a basis from which to explore the mechanisms and consequences of deterioration caused by environment and use. Building on this foundation, the book shows how to develop and implement logical solutions to conservation problems.

Combining the practical knowledge and experience of a team of conservators active in the field, with theoretical and reference material from diverse sources, Conservation of Furniture uses and integrated approach to produce a book that will prove invaluable to anyone working in or studying this subject area.

Product Description

Review

"Published in the familiar black, hard cover format of the BH collection on conservation, this book is truly the jewel in the crown of that series. .a remarkable source of information on everything I always wanted to know, From the history of furniture and conservation to the mixing of isinglass and the cleaning of marble and if I want to know more, the extensive bibliographies at the end of each section will tell me where to go. If I owned only one book this would be the one.
Not only is it comprehensive, it is also eminently enjoyable to read."
Conservation News

"The book contains over 800 pages covering every aspect of furniture design and construction and probably every material used throughout the very full history of furniture making, conservation and restoration.I believe this book should be essential reading in all college courses on furniture restoration and that every professional furniture conservator-restorer should have a copy readily to hand."
British Antique Furniture Restores Association Newsletter --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Shayne Rivers trained in traditional cabinetmaking and finishing, followed by a further four years training in furniture restoration. In 1998, she graduated from the Victoria & Albert Museum/Royal College of Art joint Conservation programme with an M.A. in Furniture Conservation, having specialised in the conservation of painted, japanned and lacquered surfaces. Soon after graduating, she was appointed to her present position as a Senior Furniture Conservator at the V&A.

Nick Umney retrained as a furniture conservator after several years working in the biological sciences and part time furniture making. He spent ten years working as a Senior Furniture Conservator at the Victoria & Albert Museum, before moving into a management role as Assistant Head of Department. He was Museum Project Manager for the British Galleries Project at the V&A from 1997-2001 before taking on his current role as Director of the Collections Services Division.

3.0 out of 5 stars Restoration or conservation? 30 July 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Drawing, as it does so heavily, on a few well-established published works this book already seems rather out-of-date and an opportunity has been missed to pull together more recent published research in a number of disciplines. The weakest areas of the book cover the subjects of upholstery and gilding. The authors are content to detail traditional materials and techniques with no mention or evaluation of modern synthetic materials and non-invasive methods of conservation in current use in studios around the world.
This is a good entry level book which should appeal to students of furniture restoration.

This book is an immensely useful reference for the treatment of a diverse range of materials and objects. It has sections on adhesives and coatings as well. A solid reference for the objects conservator; I keep coming back to it again and again. A bit pricey, but worth it.
