Product Description

Product Description

In May 2010 I was diagnosed with high cholesterol. By August 2010 it was coming down and as of November 2013 it is staying down at a level considered safe by my doctor, and all without the use of statins.

I couldn't find much advice available, especially on particular foods to avoid or choose, so once my diet plan had worked, I wrote it all down to help other people.

From HEART UK’s dietician, Linda Main: “Liz provides some practical common-sense ideas and advice which she has tried and tested to lower and maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Her results demonstrate how a healthy balanced diet, low in saturated fat and high in wholegrain, fruits and vegetables and containing some cholesterol busting foods such as oats and nuts can be a central part of achieving this.”

I would like to save you from bursting into tears in Tescos when you find that dark chocolate DOES have fat in it … and to help a few more people navigate the possibilities of controlling cholesterol levels naturally and keeping off the pills.

So in this booklet, I’m going to:
• Explain the medical bits and show you where you can find more information
• Talk about my “rules” and how they are applied in practice
• Tell you about some things you’ll be surprised you can eat, and some you’ll be surprised you can’t
• Have a quick word about places you can eat out without undermining your diet
• Go through some exercise tips

Note: There are no drawings or tables in this book so don't worry about the 3 star review!

Note: new edition with an extra recipe, more recommendations for eating out, and US as well as UK measurements for cholesterol levels.

Note: I am not a doctor. Show your doctor this book and let them know what you're planning to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the end of the world... 10 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I embarked on a health kick in January 2012 - having given up alcohol years ago and smoking a year ago, I began a daily exercise regime and filled my diet with extra fruit and vegetables. So when a nagging knee pain started getting in the way of my daily walk/run, I was devastated to be told by my GP that I had a high cholesterol level - 8.1 on the Richter scale. Damn and blast and botheration! I did some quick research on the internet - goodbye cheese, butter, cream, biscuits, everything FUN to eat, basically. I was sunk.

So it was with doom and gloom and some trepidation that I downloaded Liz Broomfield's account of how she tackled a similar problem and overcame it, without the use of drugs.

Well, hallelujah! It is not, apparently, the end of the world as we know it to adopt a low-fat diet. Thanks to Liz's no nonsense approach and a simple set of foolproof rules, I went on an exploratory expedition to my local supermarket, armed with her list of do's and dont's and a pair of reading glasses (why is nutritional information on labels so bloody difficult to read?).

I have also become a fan of rapeseed oil (or canola, as our American friends sensibly call it). It is high in monounsaturated fat and is, therefore, a thoroughly good thing. Where Liz wept when she found she couldn't have dark chocolate, I practically wept with gratitude when I found mayonnaise made with rapeseed oil that, while marginally over my allowance, could sit in my fridge as an occasional treat. In fact, thanks to this helpful guide, I didn't have to weep at all because there are perfectly acceptable alternatives to most of my favourite food. I can even have Eton Mess for pudding, using fat-free Greek yoghurt instead of cream, because meringues have no fat and are therefore allowed.

This ebook offers fantastic and realistic help and advice to people wanting to lower their cholesterol naturally. The author's own experience shows how it is possible to tackle this problem effectively without resorting to taking medication. There are many tips about what foods are and are not helpful to a cholesterol reducing diet which I found particularly helpful, and I will certainly be trying the plum cake recipe.

I had high cholesterol and Liz was able to share tips with me. Although I'm not good on the exercise bit, the diet bit was easy to stick to - and it worked! Do try this ebook; your arteries will thank you for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I need! 17 Jun 2013
By Julia
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is an excellent, easy to read book with background information, personal experience from the author and useful advice.

I have just discovered that I may need this book. I say "may need" as it seems they need a second blood test to check whether my cholesterol is of the good type or bad. However, I felt I needed immediate information so got this and read straight through it quickly. I will go back more carefully once I have a clearer understanding of my situation.

I really like the "food" pages, so much useful guidance here. I have already made changes to my diet and am avidly reading labels on food items. I am shocked at how easy it is to go well over the recommended saturated food allowance, but also relieved to see that there are plenty of ways to cut back on this and find alternatives.

Even if, when I go back to the Dr.'s, I find that I have extra good cholesterol I will be modifying my diet. However, if it is bad cholesterol, I feel confident that with the help of this book and medical advice, I will soon be on the road to repairing any damage.

4.0 out of 5 stars A brief one 28 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a very short reading telling how she did it with a change of diet and exercising. I read it right through very quickly and it is very easy to read. It does inspires me to try it out at first. The reason I gave it four stars is because I have read it and now I have forgotten it so it can't be strong enough to motivate me however I shall have to read it again to push me further.
