'.....reading Connemara Mollie was a real treat..... The book is testament to the wonderful journey she enjoyed, bonding with her horse and reliving the people she met and the adventures she enjoyed. It's a lovely, light and easy going book, which will get you booking the riding lessons, the minute you put it down!' Burnley Express 'Hilary Bradt recalls her journey across rural Ireland among the people of Galway, Mayo, Clare and Kerry in the 1980s in this sweet - and surreptitiously affecting - memoir.' Longitude Books USA 'Hilary's descriptions take us with her every hoofprint of the way as she brings the landscapes to life. She's good on people too, with life in rural Ireland prior to the "Celtic Tiger" boom.' Wanderlust 'With adventure, characters, and lessons learned the hard way, Connemara Mollie has many of the elements of the writer's beloved pony books - but this true-life adventure has a charm all of its own.' The Connemara Journal 'Hilary brings the real Ireland to life and you can't fail to get attached to the equine character.' Horse magazine

Product Description

An account of a journey through western Ireland made in 1984, fulfilling a childhood dream of a long-distance ride. The story centres on the growing bond between the author and her Connemara pony, Mollie and the many challenges that they face before the tragic conclusion in the mountains of Kerry. It is also a portrait of rural Ireland before the "Celtic Tiger" era, built up from conversations with the local people. The journey takes them through Counties Galway, Mayo, Clare and Kerry, the obstacles to their progress ranging from bogs, stone walls, and the River Shannon. "I've never tried hitchhiking with a horse before" comments the author. "It's not easy." She travelled with no set route, extending her backpacking knowledge acquired in the Andes to horse packing, "seeing the obvious advantage of climbing mountains on someone else's legs and using another's back for the packing."

4.0 out of 5 stars A gentle amble through Green Roads 30 Jun 2013
By Jane
Connemara Mollie is a gentle amble through Hilary Bradt's early years and on into the rain-lashed lushness of the emerald isle. I loved the image Bradt created for me with "green roads" and "rocky, gale-swept Connemara [where] a few hunch-backed trees leant away from the prevailing wind." It is a poignant portrait of the close relationship of trust and affection that develops between horse and rider, and which (like all close relationships) can career between love and occasionally almost hate, as frustrations, discomforts, fears and hunger are shared.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Tracks" with rain 15 Aug 2014
Robyn Davidson's "Tracks" – with rain. I'm not a horsey person at all but was completely absorbed, cantering along beaches, struggling over stone walls and plodding through bogs with the adventurous author and her companion, a pony of great character. I read the shocking ending through a mist of tears. Bradt's evocative writing brought me back to the landscape of my youth and I devored most of this book at the first sitting.

I gave Connemara Mollie 5 stars as I love to read a book that is impossible not to put down until its finished ! I have only had one frightening experience on a horse, it took off at great speed trying to be the leader of the group. Therefore the amazing bond Hilary had with this horse and her delightful descriptions of life, sight, and sound of this delightfully glorious part of Ireland brought joy to my heart. I am determined to experience it first hand. A must read, horse lover or not, and you will be by the end, I cannot wait for the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Connemara Mollie 10 Nov 2012
Connemara Mollie is a truly lovely story - makes me even more determined to visit Ireland where my father came from one of these days. Anyone who doesn't know the story couldn't fail to be shocked by the last chapter, and moved by the way Hilary has written about it. Such a sad ending but countered by the next book which is, I guess, a continuation of the same story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book by a wonderful writer 10 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Hilary Bradt is a living legend in the travel writing world, having written lots of books and published many, many more. Here she takes a more personal step back into her own past and recounts the extraordinary journey she took with Mollie (the Connemara pony of the title) through Western Ireland in 1984. A warm, at times funny, always enlightening and incredibly fascinating portrait of a time and an era which have largely disappeared, and a frank and honest account of what was ultimately, a terrible tragedy (the ending is absolutely heartbreaking). And I say this as a reader who would pay good money to have nothing whatsoever to do with horses himself...

5.0 out of 5 stars A moving portrait of Ireland 2 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is everything that a travel book should be; warm, revealing and filled with character. Hilary Bradt has a real empathy with the people she encounters on her wonderfully shambolic journey through rural Ireland. She also paints a pin sharp portrait of the foibles, fears and eccentricities of her pony Mollie. All in all a most satisfying book and I look forward to the sequel in which the journey is resumed!
