I absolutely loved this author's first book - Switchback - and when I saw this had come out, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. have to say though, it didn't impress me as much as Switchback did. Partly because you knew this book is a con from the very beginning which means it lost that mind-blowing edge to it. There was a twist to this book as there was in Switchback and it was a fantastic twist - very clever - but I didn't feel that the author delivered the 'punchline' so to speak in as dramatic a way as I felt he could, in a way that would make the author would gasp out in surprise as I did with his first novel. The twist was just kind of revealed. I found this a bit disappointing. However, this is not to say that this is not a good book. The plot was still brilliant - the con very sophisticated. The characterisation in this book was a lot better than in Switchback because I found myself actually caring about the characters in this. Kip Largo - the main character - made a brilliant narrator with his sharp, wry humour and cynical outlook on life. Even though he is a heartless con man, i couldn't help liking him. This was a quick yet very satisfying read!!
It's a shame that Matthew Klein hasn't yet got on to the British radar. He seems to be getting bigger in America but is still completely unheard of over here which is such a shame because it could definitely do well off the back of all the popular con programmes like The Hustle. I can imagine this book being turned into a big hit movie so maybe that's what it will take to make the author better known. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him. In the meantime, I am eagerly awaiting his next installment.
