Book Description

30 Oct 2012 Hoodoo Apprentice
"Be careful what you search for..."
Emma Guthrie expects this summer to be like any other in the South Carolina Lowcountry--hot and steamy with plenty of beach time alongside her best friend and secret crush, Cooper Beaumont, and Emma's ever-present twin brother, Jack. But then a mysterious eighteenth-century message in a bottle surfaces, revealing a hidden pirate bounty. Lured by the adventure, the trio discovers the treasure and unwittingly unleashes an ancient Gullah curse that attacks Jack with the wicked flesh-eating Creep and promises to steal Cooper's soul on his approaching sixteenth birthday.
But when a strange girl bent on revenge appears, demon dogs become a threat, and Jack turns into a walking skeleton; Emma has no choice but to learn hoodoo magic to undo the hex, all before the last days of summer--and her friends--are lost forever.

About the Author

Books provided Lea Nolan a portal to enchanted lands where anything was possible and characters relied on their wits to wiggle out of sticky situations. Today, even though she's all grown up, she writes the kinds of stories she sought as a teen -- smart paranormals with bright heroines, crazy-hot heroes, diabolical plot twists, plus a dose of magic, a draft of romance, and a sprinkle of history. She has an undergraduate degree in history and a master's in public policy and women's studies, which believe it or not help a lot in her fiction writing. She lives in Maryland with her heroically supportive husband and three clever children, who've figured out how to get out of doing their chores.

3.0 out of 5 stars Conjure 10 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback
A curse wrought between piracy, slavery and revenge is not a good start to a summer holiday for three teenagers in South Carolina.

Elene, aged fourteen, and her twin brother Jack are on the beach near St. Helena Island with their friend Cooper, when they find an old bottle in the sand which contains a note telling of treasure and a curse. Elene is made uneasy by a young Gullah woman who appears and suggests they search the ruins of a big house. Magnolia appears to have pointed them in the right direction, for they uncover a sealed box in the remains of the cellar. But Jack's hand is severely burned by a booby trap and matters get strange and scary.

The teens don't want to tell their parents what they have been doing, so Jack's burns blister with the first-aid box salve not helping. Magnolia turns up again and guides them to an elderly Gullah lady with an isolated house in the forest. This Grannie says that a black magic curse has been placed on Jack and she must CONJURE white magic, or hoodoo, to break it. She makes a salve of elder and other plants, but Jack's blisters burst and take the skin and flesh off his fingers. The curse will continue to progress up his arm. Fierce large dogs appear out of the woods and terrify the unhappy teens. Between wards, herbal spells, stealing items from a museum and divining the past, the youngsters don't know what they have got into, and a hurricane is on its way.

CONJURE contains a lot of realism, which is why I am concerned that the young people do not seek proper medical aid - herbs are what we used before we had antibiotics, and Jack would certainly have died of blood poisoning, curse or no curse. Cutting hands with an old knife to mix blood would easily lead to hepatitis. I am not a great fan of horror and the continuous looks at Jack's increasingly skeletal suppurating hand were just disgusting. Other than that, Lea Nolan has written an exciting semi-horror adventure which will shed light on the eighteenth century and paint a picture of a lovely part of the world.

Emma Guthrie is spending the summer with her twin Jack and their best friend (her secret crush), Cooper Beaumont, in the South Carolina Lowcountry. After a year apart, her and Jack in D.C. and Cooper at boarding school, she can't wait for a whole summer together.

But, her vacation is about to take a shocking turn when the three teens discover an ancient message in a bottle - telling of a hidden pirate treasure. Finding the treasure chest, in the ruins of the old manor, unleashes an eighteenth-century Gullah curse that infects Jack with the flesh-eating Creep.

Add in a mysterious girl who seems to know much more than she's sharing, an old Gullah healer who makes Emma her Hoodoo Apprentice, and snarling devil dogs. How are the twins going to keep Dad from finding out? Why is Miss Delia so worried about Cooper's upcoming birthday?

Will Emma learn enough magic to break the curse before all of Jack melts away?

This exciting debut novel, the first in the Hoodoo Apprentice series, proves that wonderful writers know how to tell great stories for, and about, teens.

Emma's adventurous summer with Jack and Cooper took me right back to my youth. Complete with secret crushes and all the awkwardness of being almost fifteen. Unfortunately, I never found a message in a bottle or had an amazing adventure.

Fortunately, I never unleashed an ancient curse on my brother. Although, there were days ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read! 9 Jan 2013

I will start out with the one thing that bothered me the most. The ages of these characters. Every YA book I've read, the characters have been anywhere from 16 - 18 so coming across the main characters who are 14 & 15 are a little off putting. I understand, with the story, why they're so young but I don't know. I would have liked to seen these characters a bit older than what they are. But alas, it is what it is. I just find myself having a hard time really getting in to the story with such young characters for YA. Again, this is my personal opinion on it...

With that being said, it might have effected my rating for this book because I had a hard time getting past that. (Don't ask me why, exactly? Maybe I didn't find it so believable with them being as young as they were?) The story itself was really great. I've never read any Hoodoo books before so it was pretty great. I've read my share of witch books so it's very similar. I like them. I really loved Miss Delia - she would be a great person to learn from. Her attitude and outlook on everything is just so positive and inspiring.

I really like the main character, Emma. I especially like the relationship she has with her twin brother, Jack, who looks nothing like her. Then you add in Cooper, who is Jack's best friend and Emma's crush - it just is perfect. They all have a close bond together and work well off one another's personalities. I don't think they would've accomplished what they had if they didn't mesh so well together or if you would've taken one of these people out of the equation I doubt they would've been successful. Or well, as successful as they were...

I am curious to see how the next book is going to play out. Well, I'm sure I'll know how it'll play out but it'll be exciting to see how they get there. What obstacles will be put before them in order to reach their goal.

If you are looking for something different but still with a supernatural appeal to it, I would definitely recommend checking out this book. If you like books with a magic element to it then you'll definitely be interested in this, as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some things are good, some are...meh 10 Dec 2012
By Amy T - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
CONJURE by Lea Nolan is one of those books that gave me mixed feelings, guys. One the one hand, HOODOO. I love reading about elemental magic because it seems so much more real than, say, Harry Potter magic (even though Harry Potter magic is THE BEST EVER). Something about magic like hoodoo seems creepier to me because it seems more likely to be possible in our world, and that is awesome, so big props for debut hoodoo! On the other hand, though, I thought the characters and the character development in CONJURE could have used a little more work. I didn't really feel any connections to any of them, and some of the plot points felt like a bunch of sharp turns that came out of nowhere, as opposed to slower, steeper curves. WHOA I don't even know if that makes sense. Don't worry. I'll explain myself.

So the good stuff: Like I said, the hoodoo was pretty interesting. Emma, her brother Jack, and her friend/crush, Cooper are dealing with some pretty fascinating, albeit horrible, hoodoo. The curse Jack is suffering from was intriguing and the Creep (a flesh-wasting part of the curse) was GROSS, and therefore great. I definitely felt the jeopardy the kids were facing to save Emma's brother. (He, though, was a tool.)

When Emma enlists the help of Miss Delia, resident hoodoo practitioner, to help them break the curse and save Jack from succumbing to the Creep, I thought things were at their best. Miss Delia was spunky and super, and I liked her as a mentor. So, generally speaking, I thought the hoodoo aspects of CONJURE were fun and interesting. The weakest aspect was probably Maggie, the mysterious young girl who has this weird hold over Jack. She was pretty weird and her identity was a little bit predictable. It's obvious that there's lots more to this curse, though, and it's promising.

All of those things considered, I wasn't blown away by the characters. CONJURE had one of those stories where things basically start happening right away with not so much explanation and it's a little jarring. And it doesn't really change as things progress, either. This brought about two things for me: One, I always felt like things were happening without much transition, kind of just hopping around from one event to another. Little bit whiplash-y. And two, I felt like we didn't have much of a chance to get to know the characters very well at the beginning, so even as the story moves on, I didn't really have a good feel for them, and I didn't think that they grew or changed very much, especially the guys. Jack is basically irritating the whole time. Granted, he's slowly melting away from a hoodoo curse and is under some pretty heavy magical influence, but still. Not so redeeming. (And can I just state right now for the record how much I dislike parents who don't notice HORRIBLY OBVIOUS things? I don't like that plot device. Jack's skin is falling off because of the curse. By the end of the book, nearly all the flesh on his WHOLE ARM has DISAPPEARED. Dad? No clue at all. I just don't buy it.) I wish the characters were more engaging.

Lea Nolan does give us a little romance in CONJURE, but it's pretty tame. Cute, but tame. Not too many feels, but Emma and Cooper are younger than I realized going in (Emma is only 14 and Cooper is on the verge of turning 16), so I can get behind it. I think I would have had more of a reaction to it if I felt more invested in the characters. Alas.

I do hope you give CONJURE a go, though, friends. It certainly had enjoyable qualities, and there's definitely things left unresolved that are promising (obviously, because it's a series). The atmosphere and setting were great, and I really enjoyed getting little glimpses of the Gullah culture, which is something I have sadly never encountered before in YA. There are some historical flashbacks that gave me creeps, too, and I'm hoping for some more of that as well. Not a perfect debut, but I'd give Lea Nolan`s work another shot for sure.
