Product Description

Album Description

The runaway success of the Konono N°1 album has given worldwide exposure to the strange and spectacular electro-traditional mixtures which are being concocted in the suburbs of Kinshasa, Congo. Hot on the footsteps of Congotronics 1, here comes a fresh selection of even more amazing sounds, courtesy of no less than 6 electro-traditional bands from Kinshasa, which have all been especially recorded and produced by Crammed's Vincent Kenis.

These bands all draw on traditional trance music, to which they have incorporated heavily-distorted sounds generated by DIY amplification of their instruments... just like Konono N°1, except that the instrumentation, timbres and rhythms used by these bands are relatively diverse: the trademark electrified thumb pianos and megaphones are joined by an array of distorted drums, swirling guitars and hypnotic balafons.

The Congotronics 2 album also includes a full-length (40 minute) DVD based on material filmed by Vincent Kenis while he recorded these bands in Kinshasa.

About the Artist

Kasai Allstars: Kasai is a Congolese province the size of France, well-known for its diamond fields and vivid musical traditions. This collective of artists incorporates members from four different Kasaian bands, including Basokin and Masanka Sankayi, who also appear separately on this album. Their repertoire includes a variety of different Kasaian styles.

Kisanzi Congo: like Konono N° 1, come from the Bacongo province (specifically the Mbeko region) and their line-up is similar. But whereas Konono's likembes use raw power to carry their message, Kisanzi Congo rely more on virtuosity and adopt a freer form. We recorded them in 'Galerie des Trois Z' ( "Zaire - our country, our river, our currency"), a deserted shopping mall in the center of Kinshasa.

Sobanza Mimanisa: 'orchestra of light', are the resident band in Nganda Boboto, where we recorded this piece. There are only two melodic instruments here: a guitar - whose 'power chord' style is very unusual in Kinshasa - and a likembe which manages to play the bass and solo parts at the same time!

Basokin: ("the Basongye from Kinshasa") are from the Songye region, at the eastern fringe of Kasai. Their frontman Mputu Ebondo 'Mi Amor' is a well-known spokesman for the Songye and Kasaian community. On this particular session, recorded at Porte Noire, in the Matonge district, Basokin was reduced to its essential components: three singers, two percussion players and two guitarists.

Masanka Sankayi: dancers, singers and story-tellers Muyamba Nyunyi and Kabongo have been together since the Seventies. Muyamba the preacher is also an excellent bass likembe player. Unlike Konono's, his instrument is a 20" square box featuring half a likembe on each side and on which he sits in a foetus-like position. This piece was recorded at Porte Rouge, in the Matonge district.

Konono No.1: the amazing word-of-mouth buzz for their debut album for Crammed resulted in Congotronics 1 topping the best-sellers charts of independent retailers such as Stern's and Rough Trade. Unable to come to the UK because of a problem with visas their aborted support slot at the Tortoise gig at the Royal Festival Hall in London has been described as the greatest gig that never happened.

This a superb album which, due to the tracks having been recorded specifically for this release, has a coherent feel despite featuring a number of groups. Each act builds on the sound of the traditional instruments and arrangements of the region, to create something which sounds authentic and yet startlingly contemporary.

It's absorbing, relaxing and takes you away from your surroundings or augments them in unexpected ways - try walking around London streets with this stuff going on in your earphones, it's a unique experience!

And as if the music itself wasn't enough to convince you, Crammed Discs have not only supplied the usual fold-out digipack with colour booklet, but excelled even their own high standards by supplying at no extra cost a 40-odd minute DVD featuring many of the bands performing tracks from the album - a great guide to the instruments to which you're listening and how they're played.

Lose yourself 11 Nov 2011

This is even better than the first Congotronics album (with Konono no. 1). The various bands have their individual takes on the same formula - a combination of traditional rural Congolese music with home-made amplification and home-made instruments - both making use of Kinshasa scrapyards. The resulting rawness and distortion add extra power to what is already trance-inducing music, and you can certainly lose yourself in this. And, as a bonus, the utterly delightful DVD shows you plenty of musicians and dancers... well... losing themselves. Superb.
