Anne Davis, a mother of 2 has written a clear, easy to understand book that is spilt in to two main sections. The first, "The Question of Discipline", explains what discipline is, and the importance of starting to discipline a child in the early years. The underlying theme is love for the child and consistency on part of the parent. Physical punishment is discussed at some length, examining the arguments both for and against. What is appropriate punishment is considered and positive basic principles are given. A lot of research has gone in to the chapters regarding the use of physical punishment in parenting, and provides a well-thought out rationale for smacking as part of discipline within a framework of love.
Though the book covers serious issues, it does have a lighter side. The text is accompanied with amusing line drawings (by Nicola Wells) and is written with the reader in mind. The author uses her experience as a mother and as a childminder to enhance the book, by providing accounts of her experience in raising children, with a common sense approach.
Confident Parenting will take pride of place on your bookshelf. It was written to "give parents the confidence to follow their best instincts in the way they discipline their children" (pg.78). Parenting is never an easy job... and children don't come with manuals, so when faced with a disobedient child parents need to follow their instincts. This book will help you have the confidence to discipline your children effectively and fairly.
