Synopsis
Written just before World War I for Havelock Ellis's series "Studies in the Psychology of Sex", this book is based on the anonymous sexual memoirs of a highly literate and cultured member of the Russian upper middle classes. The book provides an insight into the sexual life of pre-revolutionary Russia, and sheds light on Nabakov's great ironic novel "Lolita", which was strongly influenced by Victor X's memoirs. Victor X gives a totally frank account of his sexual experiences from childhood onwards, which provides a description of his various sexual encounters and responses, and an account of Russian cultural life - personal and social - not hitherto known outside that country.
