Product Description

Product Description

Disillusioned with the corporate ownership, mega-bucks culture, and overpaid prima donnas, of the Premiership, Steve Leach embarked on a journey to rediscover the soul of professional football. His journey, over the 2012/13 season, took him to twenty-four different Football Conference towns and fixtures, visiting venues as diverse as the Impact Arena in Alfreton, Stonebridge Road in Ebbsfleet, and Luton’s Kenilworth Road.

Encountering dancing bears at Nuneaton, demented screamers at Barrow, and 'badger pasties' at rural Forest Green – Steve unearthed the stories behind the places and people – it was a journey that showed just how football and communities intertwine, and mean something.

As the season progressed Steve relished how unfancied teams of part-timers, such as Braintree Town and Dartford, could defeat higher status opponents, and watched 'big name' clubs such as Luton Town and Lincoln City struggle to make an impact. Throughout all this, his anguish grew at the prospect of his beloved Stockport County getting relegated.

Conference Season is a warm and discerning celebration of the diversity of towns and clubs which feature in the Conference, and of the supporters who turn up week-after-week to cheer their teams on.

Steve Leach's journey to every Conference Premier ground is a 'tour de force' and his observations are not just confined to the twenty four matches he spectates. He provides the reader with invaluable context in the form of pen pictures of the towns and town centres, the route to and the style and feel of the ground, his take on the supporters and a potted history and idiosyncrasies of the home club. It is also an incredibly easy read as well as an enjoyable one as each eleven or twelve page chapter is a short story in it's own right.

This book should be read by everyone involved in English football management from Greg Dyke downwards but especially by the millions of football fans out there. It serves as a powerful and poignant reminder of the very essence of the football experience that we are in danger of sacrificing for ever on the altar of big finance and big business. A well researched and brilliantly observed book.

For the price of one coference game- in some venues- you can follow Steve Leach to 24 conference grounds from the 2012-13 season. The ground, the team history, the game and the local ambience beautifully described. A fitting present to any non league fan
