Biography

A unique and hugely talented artist, Tellier’s identity can be found in the triangle between genius, eccentric and enigma. The son of a musician whose first inspiration came from Pink Floyds Atom Heart Mother, he released his first album in 2001 and his break-through single La Ritournelle in 2004 and in subsequent years has carved out a diverse and esoteric path, from working with Daft ... From the retro-futurism of Sexuality to the louche euro-funk of Politics, Sebastien Tellier has reinvented himself at an impressive rate. There has however always been something about each of these incarnations that doesn't separate them entirely; something that makes them distinctively Tellier. Even at his most sincere, there’s a wry humour presiding over most of his output. While latest album Confection marks a return to the lush baroque-pop of his earlier releases, there is still a sense that he may not be taking it entirely seriously. Conceived as the score to an imaginary motion picture, the album attempts to invoke the tender romanticism of the French Nouvelle-Vague. But in actuality, the orchestral climaxes swing between Godard and more often than not late night euro-trash. At times sincerely romantic at others resembling something decidedly more sleazy making for a rather uneven listening experience.

Tracks like “Hypnose”, with its swelling orchestration and Vangelis synth stabs suggest a development that never quite happens. All too often the tracks lack the dynamism needed to give any clarity and they either fizzle out or shuffle along in background. Perhaps in the context of a film soundtrack this unobtrusiveness is warranted or even necessary but here it relegates the songs to the status of muzak. The kitsch classical guitar on “Delta Romantica” brings to mind travel videos for some nightmarishly mundane continental holiday resort and it's a recurring feeling throughout the album. Images of sunburnt accountants relaxing aside oversized pools, novelty cocktail in hand. It is difficult to feel particularly romantic. Particularly jarring is the two minute synth organ piece “Waltz”.

After his pop ventures on My God is Blue, Sebastien Tellier returns to his more simple musical roots. While not as quiet and introspective a record as the exquisite L'Incroyable Verité, Confection is a moving listen. It builds like a suite, in that melodies like Adieu and L'Amour Naissant come in multiple parts throughout the record. All this gives Confection a spirit of wholeness as an album, featuring a great blend of electronica and traditional instruments. As a fan of Tellier's for a long time, I love that with every album he tries to explore different directions than his last, and this belongs in your library if you have been following his music.

Best album of 2013 16 Aug. 2014

Best album of 2013. One of the most underrated albums to have come out this decade. Tellier's variations on a melody throughout the album tie it together and hearken back to the great musicians of the past. Not to be overlooked; and worth every red cent on vinyl.
