4.0 out of 5 stars entertaining story 10 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Long thought of as a boys adventure writer, Mr. Henty reads as well and as exciting as he did to me 5 decades ago. The plots are simple and the narrative easy to understand for youngsters. Great stuff!

4.0 out of 5 stars More story and less historical detail 20 Mar 2013
By A. R. Salazar - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story begins with a young boy who, typical of Henty, displays all the virtues and none of the vices, and who advances in rank at an unbelievable pace with all humility. It is an enjoyable way to learn about life in the British navy, ships, fighting, and pirates. The only time it goes into great historical detail is towards the end of the book, in contrast to many other Henty books that weave a little bit of a personal story between historical narrations. I was glad I read it, and would recommend it to others. All the books by this author I read along with the historical period I am teaching my kids in our homeschool, finding them to be an enjoyable way to delve deeper into the topic. Most of them take me 8 hours to read, I think.

5.0 out of 5 stars By Conduct and Courage 7 Feb 2013
By Bill Ferris - Published on Amazon.com

I first read my brother's copy in the early 1950s (I received and still have "In the Heart of the Rockies" ). Although G A Henty could be classified as a "Formula" writer and these books were written for teenagers they are still a great read. "Conduct and Courage" predates C S Forester's "Hornblower" series by several decades and could well have influenced Forester.
