In this game you take the role of an Italian Condottiere and must try and unite the independent regions of Italy into one powerful kingdom.

You get with the game 110 cards, one board showing Italy and its regions, 36 cubes in 6 colours and two pawns. The artwork on the cards is really beautiful and adds to the theme of the game. The board is small, but functional and is also very aesthetically pleasing. The cubes and pawns are wooden and do their job - nothing spectacular about them but they aren't rubbish either. Overall the components are of a very nice quality - I cannot think of a drawback considering the price.

The game works roughly like this: You start with 10 cards, and the player who won the previous battle (or the youngest player if it is the first battle) selects a region to contest for. This is important because if you control several connected regions you win. The addition of a Pope marker which stops battles taking place in certain regions makes deciding where battles are fought and where the pope is placed fairly important in terms of who might win.

However, the real strategy comes in the battles themselves. Through the playing of cards, each player attempts to build up the strongest force in order to win the region under contention. The most basic cards are mercenaries which range in value from 1-10. However, there are a range of special cards that can unexpectedly turn the tide of battle: For example, bishop cards cause the highest ranked mercenary card in play to be discarded. So if one player thinks he may be winning because he just played a mercenary worth 10, slap down a bishop and watch his face drop. Similarly the winter card limits the effectiveness of the mercenaries, reducing all of them to a value of 1.

Format: Toy
Got this for Christmas and have had it out a few times over the holidays. As a family of reasonably experienced gamers (ages 11 - 47) we found it very easy to learn, and satisfying and fun to play. All our games to date have been resolved in the final battle for the last remaining territory. These games have taken about 40 minutes.
There's a definite element of luck in terms of the cards you are dealt, but skilful play will produce results much of the time.
Nicely made, good components and a compact box so it's easy to store / travel.
Four stars - recommended.

I used to own the earlier edition of this game which had very pretty cards; they were also longer and narrower -- which made it much easier to hold 18 cards or so. The new cards are just... -- well, not as pretty as the old ones. A little disappointed.

Once we got to grips with the rules we started to enjoy this. However, after a few drinks the many ways in which you can help and hinder each other started to fray tempers. ;) A good game and definitely one to get out after dinner, but never has "pick your battles" been more apt.

Condottiere is a fun, accessible card game that takes about 30-45 minutes to play depending on the number of players. The gamebox itself is small and sturdy, and easily holds all of its components inside. Included with the game are 110 cards, a well-written rulebook, a small board depicting a map of 16th century Italy and a handful of wooden cubes in different colors (for the different players), as well as two sturdy wooden pawns (black and white) to show which city a battle is taking place in and which city is protected (more detail on that in a bit). The artwork on the cards is fantastic, and some of the best I've seen in a card game.

I'm not going to go into great detail of the game but the idea is that its the Renaissance and Italy; being made up of a number of small city states warring for dominance is trying to unite itself by means of the mercenaries at the time (Condottierri). To win, players must be the first to capture a specific number of cities on the board (if the cities are next to each other, the number required to win is smaller).

To capture a city, players alternate taking turns playing mercenary cards adding to their army strength until all but one player passes, the city state going to the highest strength army that resides there. There's also a number of interesting cards that have various effects that change the game up (the Bishop card for example, removes the highest strength mercenary card from the game and also makes one city untouchable until another bishop card is played). The cubes are placed on the board to show what city belongs to which player. There's a lot of fun involved in deciding when to play your cards because you won't receive new cards to use until all but one player are out of cards.

I highly recommend Condottiere to anyone looking for a fun, fairly simple card game that has quite a bit of depth and re-playability to it.

This is an excellent game for 3 or more people. (Theoretically it can be played by 2 people, but it isn't nearly as fun).

The basics of the game are that you use cards to fight battles as you attempt to control Renaissance Italy. Most of the game comes down to card battles between the participants, as they try to take over more of the regions on the map. There is some strategy involved in where on the map to fight battles (very straightforward) but most of the game is spent with the cards.

It's fun because it is a simple game, but has enough different sorts of cards that there are strategies for everyone. And it is a fast game! That means you can play a few games in the same time that it takes to play a single game of Settlers of Catan or Carcassonne. It is easy to learn, and even long-time players will find that every hand gives enough variety to keep it interesting.

Condottiere is easy to learn and plays fast, but it also has quite a bit of depth. It is for two to six players. I think it actually is more interesting with more players than fewer. It is essentially a trick taking game, however a new round doesn't begin until everyone is out of cards, so it is imperative to husband your resources accordingly. There is also a fair amount of strategic depth when it comes to deciding which territories to capture. Replayability is high. Most will enjoy this game.

This is a great small game to start or end a game night. It's a fun and easy game that anyone can play. There is enough strategy involved that you'll need wit to win, but there is also enough randomness that weaker players are able to compete.

The game plays like a mix between poker and the 'war' card game. You get a large hand of cards, and each player takes a turn laying one down. Most cards are numbers, the rest are special abilities. Everyone keeps laying down cards one at a time, or passing. Once you pass you cannot lay any more cards that battle. Person with the highest number wins the battle and claims a territory.
Now the trick is, once that battle is done if 2 or more players still have cards you move on to another battle (without receiving any additional cards). In this way, it is beneficial to not blow your whole hand on one battle.

The special cards are good for throwing a wrench in the mix (every card is worth only 1, end the battle immediately, destroy all cards with highest number, etc).

While I wish there was a larger mix of cards with different abilities, the game has remained fun with multiple plays. The more people, the more fun it is. 2 player games are kind of dumb, because once one player has no cards there are no more battles.
Let me explain:
After you pass during a battle you cannot play anymore cards, but the opposing player can play as many more as he/she wants.
At the end of a battle, any player can then discard their hand if they have no remaining soldier cards.
Because of these 2 rules, in a 2 player game once you pass your opposition can screw the pooch by just playing/discarding every card in their hand. This effectively ends the "round" and there are no more battles. You are left with no wins and have to discard your hand (saving 2 cards if they wish for the next round).
This just turns the game into a "one battle per round" game where both players just play their whole hand leaving the game entirely to chance, with only slight skill in the order of which the cards are played.
To avoid this, my wife and I established a "win +1 rule".
In other words, you can play as many soldier cards as you need to win the battle, plus an additional soldier. This seems to help encourage us to pass and save a hand, knowing there will be another battle, instead of just dumping our hands while at the same time leaving the +1 window so you're not stuck with a single soldier at the end of the battle.

Condottiere is a card game in which players are trying to control provinces in Renaissance Italy, in an effort to be the first to acquire four such connected regions. Gameplay sees players use numbered cards to bid for a particular territory through auctions, and this is kept interesting with the help of special cards with unique abilities.

While far from ideal with two or six players, it's best with four or five players, and decent with three players. With these numbers, it offers a lot of game in a small and easy to learn package. The game has randomness, but it is mitigated by good hand management and the quick play time.
