Product Description

Product Description
Fourteenth-century Europe is writhing in the grasp of the Black Death, and in Britain, the Hundred Years' War drags painfully on; danger, uncertainty and desperation are indiscriminate. During this unstable time, English knight Sir John de Hawkwood, veteran of the battles of Crecy and Poitiers, leads his White Company into the war-torn territory of medieval Italy, and begins a chequered career in the service of the warring Italian city states - Pisa, Florence, Milan and Rome. Exploring the enigma of Hawkwood, knight, mercenary and freebooter extraordinaire, "Condottierre" is a novel of kings and princes, popes and anti-popes, dukes and despots, saints and sinners. Against a backdrop of plague and pestilence, internecine conflict and shifting allegiances, Crockett weaves a complex web of loyalty and betrayal, ambition and intrigue, simmering hatred and enduring love. Based on exhaustive research this is a splendidly realised historical fiction and an evocative and truly compelling adventure.

About the Author
Edward John ('Eddie') Crockett was born in Aberdeen and educated at the Universities of Aberdeen and Zurich. After lecturing at Zurich University, he moved into journalism then public relations and media consultancy. He lives in Southern Brittany.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Knight's Tale, 13 Jun 2006
By M. R. Houlton-hart (Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book tells of the adventures of Sir John de Hawkwood. Disgraced by a powerful enemy at Court, Sir John is courted by the Noblemen of Pisa to travel to Italy to become a Condottiere (a leader of mercenary soldiers) in the pay of the great City, to defend them from the other warring Italian States. Sir John readily excepts and leaves England, France and the Hundred Years War behind him. From there Sir John commands the famous White Company, his band of mercenaries as they defend Pisa from all its enemies. However Sir John is soon drawn into the world of Italian Politics and discovers that though Italy may be divided there is plenty of money to be made but will it be at the cost of his soul?

An engrossing read though a bit on the short side. The book begins when his military carrer is at its peek and it would have been nice to have seen Sir John Hawkwood reach that point and seen his trials and tribulations. The book does give a large insight into Medieval Italian Politics and the different Italian states such as Milan, Pisa & Florance. You are also shown how alliances were made and broken by the power brokers on the City Councils.

Overall this book was a marvelous read touching on subjects such as loyalty, passion, betrayal and political intrigue and anybody who enjoys Medieval Fiction would do well to read this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction at it's best..., 5 Jun 2006
Crockett has created a book that walks the tightrope between epic ripping yarn and historical biography with some aplomb.

He has a sweeping histroical narrative style, immersing you in the lives, detail and setting of his books. Exhaustive research underpins a fluid and unhurried narrative. Crockett manages to paint a maginificent picture of Northern italy - in effect he uses the historical setting and varied geographical locations, as his canvas. He has indeed painted a wonderfully clear picture of the time and places involved in the book. He then takes this canvas and adds to the foreground a vivid and wide ranging cast of characters that are elegantly bought to life over the several decades of the books time span. He captures the excitement of a first kiss between passionate lovers as eloquently as he does the the famous Palio of Sienna.

The political infighting, adds intrigue to the novel and is always compelling. The central character of Hawkwood, the English knight that is both protector and attacker throughout Northern Italy is deftly handled, we watch as this fighting man, a proud and noble leader develops as a person and a political tool. His love affairs and role as soldier beutifully contrasted, so to his torn loyalties as hired mercanery and would be servant to the English crown.

If you like your books big on scale, are interested and fascintaed by history and ultimately enjoy exciting romantic tales then this book is most definitely for you! The fact that it is all based on fact makes it all the more compelling. The authors passion for his subject is evident throughout.

One criticism may be the authors use of time jumps through dated headings, but this is only a minor personal niggle.

Highly recommended

brilliantly written with enough emphasis on the mood and feel of the time to illustrate a under exposed historic figure. if you liked this you might also try The Religion as they share similar flavour
