The Time, or The Original 7ven, are back - 21 years after their last album "Pandemonium", Morris Day is back with the full original lineup of the band, produced by Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Jesse Johnson.
1. Strawberry Lake - We're on familiar ground here, a Sly Stone type groove (featuring Sue Ann Carwell on vocals to boot), that recalls Ice Cream Castles, the title track of their 3rd album.
2. Condensate - the title track that explains in their unique way, that when performing these middle-aged veterans don't sweat, they condensate! A funky groove that recalls previous material like 'Release It', a very classic Time sound with extended synth squeals through the chorus. A highlight.
3. #Trendin' - The lead single. Very much an update of The Time sound of 'Jerk Out' etc. This really wouldn't be out of place on a Britney Spears album, which isn't particularly a good thing, but they just about pull it off.
4. If I Was Yo Man - A very funky 'Release It' type drum pattern sits underneath this very slick and lush mid-tempo funk/ballad. Great guitar work by Jesse.
5. Role Play - A very modern 'urban' sounding R&B/hip-hop track. Somewhat out of place, and the synth stabs and scratches really date the track, this wouldn't sound out of place on Pandemonium even.
6. Sick - Jesse's guitar opens this funk/rock number, and continues throughout, cool chorus, great track.
7. Lifestyle - Ballad that brings to mind Bernadette Cooper's (of Klymaxx) style of ballad. Not a favourite, nice synths though.
8. Faithful - Typical sparse Jam/Lewis ballad, wouldn't sound out of place on one of Janet's post-90s flop albums. Next.
9. Cadillac - Back to the funk. Very sparse, melodic funk rap that recalls earlier work and even quotes 'The Stick'!
10. Aydkmn - Guitar-laden funk/rap. This is kind of superfluous to requirement, as this style is already covered better elsewhere on the album.
11. One Step - This is the 'After Hi-School' type bouncy silly track. Actually very modern sounding, wouldn't sound out of place on a Beyonce record. Take that however you like! Jesse again saves this with his awesome axe work.
12. Toast To The Party Girl - Minneapolis Sound all. the. way. Dirty Mind/The Time sounding guitar riff, 4 to the floor beat and squealing synth lines. It's 1981 all over again!
13. Hey Yo - An urban 'in the club' track that Jam/Lewis cut for some closeted crooner like Usher etc. Truly horrible chant chorus, worst track on the album by far.
14. Go Home To Yo Man - The closing seduction ballad. This is 'International Lover', 'Girl' territory. Slick, lush.... Ooooh! Do Me, Baby!
There might be just one or two tracks too many here. I'd rather have a solid 10-12 track album, than a 16 track one with fillers. But overall, this is a great set and a welcome return by the Time. If you're a Prince/Minneapolis Sound fan, you HAVE to pick this up, along with
The Family's (nay fDeluxe) new album 'Gaslight', which is even better!
