Synopsis
With the stage set by a contemporary spate of films starring WWE wrestlers, including SEE NO EVIL (Glen 'Kane' Jacobs) and THE MARINE (John Cena), THE CONDEMNED follows suit by building a story around the massive physique and impassive demeanour of pro wrestler 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin. Austin plays former military agent Jack Conrad, whose top-secret mission to El Salvador went awry; the mountainous man wound up on death row in a local prison while his associates back home conveniently forgot about him. Conrad is offered a final chance at clemency by the evil entertainment tycoon Ian Breckel (Robert Mammone, THE MATRIX RELOADED), who buys up Conrad and nine other condemned men and forces them to participate in his diabolical new reality-TV show. The game is simple: the contestants are dropped on a remote island fitted with cameras, and instructed to kill or be killed over the next 30 hours. At the end of that time, the sole survivor will be awarded his freedom and a large cash prize, and the event can be viewed online for $49.95. Conrad, not a murderer by nature, is forced to defend himself against fellow contestants Saiga (Masa Yamaguchi), who is a Japanese martial artist; badass Brit McStarley (former soccer star Vinnie Jones); and the deadly Ghanaian woman Yasantwa (Emelia Jones). Meanwhile, Conrad’s girlfriend back home (Madeline West) worries about his safety, and Mammone’s own girlfriend (Victoria Mussett) develops some doubts as to the morality of their online venture. The film attempts to critique the culture of violence that informs our media, but also works as a straightforward B-movie thriller, well-equipped with tough guys, one-liners, and nonstop violence.

4.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good action film, 25 Mar 2008
By KM (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
10 convicts sentanced to death row are put on a remote island to take part in a new show where they have 40 hours to be the last one standing, using any means necessary to kill their opposition in the latest in internet "entertainment". The last one standing then gets to walk free.

'Stone Cold' Steve Austin and Vinnie Jones are the lead cast in this brilliant and brutal action movie, paying homage to classics like The Running Man. Jones character in particular is extremely violent and ruthless, as a rapist, murderer and racist, he is without a doubt the most unlikeable (yet strangely likeable) of the entire cast and this is defintely the best role I have seen Jones in so far. Steve Austin shows that he can act outside of the wrestling entertainment business and plays the wrongfully imprisoned Conrad very well.

Overall this is a well made, little known action film that fans of the genre should love. The action is non stop, the violence is very strong and it is just a great film that you can just turn your brain off for for 90 minutes and enjoy. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars WWE Films Finally Got It Right, 5 April 2008
By Steven Stewart "Critic Extraordinaire" (steveo.stewart@hotmail.co.uk) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
But even now it has its faults, the violent scenes at times become quite uncomfortable to watch and the acting is something to be desired. With these faults this film still has many plus points that make it one of the best WWE films to date. (Of the 3)

The story places Jack Riley, an ex special forces operative is caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and winds up on death row. A multi millionaire is ready to give him his break as he has a concept to place 10 Death Row convicts on an Island and let them loose on each other. They are told that there must only be one man left standing after the 30 hour time limit, or they all die. The last man standing is given his freedom and Breckel, the man with the concept will capitalise off the millions of internet subscribers who want to watch a live death tournament.
Jack Riley after being missing for over a year is seen by one of his old school friends and the FBI inform his wife, Sarah Cavanaugh. The only thing she can do is wait and watch and hope he wins the tournament because there's only one way out and that's to kill.

Along with this being a WWE film I have to say Austin was the perfect person for the lead character. He's tough, he's got an attitude and he fears nothing. For those fans of the wrestling world they will say the pure depiction of such a personality is Austin. For those who aren't familiar with Steve Austin within the wrestling world you will still come to appreciate how much of an intimidating character Steve Austin can portray. Vinnie Jones is something special as well and presents something that can be quite scary and at times make it awkward to watch.

This is a pretty mindless action movie but that's something that can gain an appreciation on its own. If you decide to forget that it's associated with the WWE I garauntee that you wont be disappointed by how fun this can be.
